Dear Members of the COOPER Surname Discussion Group, Ezekiel M. COOPER and Ansel D. COOPER were full-blooded Mohegan Indians who were living on the Mohegan Reservation in New London County, Connecticut in 1861, according to the 1861 Census posted on the New London County, Connecticut USGenWeb site. A search of U.S. Census Indexes showed Ezekiel M. COOPER included in the 1860 Census of Norwich, New London County, Connecticut, page 972. If you share my interest in these two COOPERs, Ezekiel and Ansel, who were Mohegan Indians, please contact me, and we will explore such questions as how they came to take the COOPER surname, who their families were and what became of them after 1861! Thank you for any suggestions or information you may have. Randal W. Cooper Note: Another COOPER who was listed in the 1861 Mohegan Census of New London, Connecticut was Adelaide COOPER, but the percentage of Indian blood was not recorded.
