    1. Re: [COOPER] Cooper - name derivation
    2. Hi Tom, I used to live in Aughton about 5 miles away from Standish and 2 miles away from Ormskirk. In between Ormskirk and Standish - was Lord Derby's residence - Lathom House. All of these places were in Lancashire England, and were involvred in the English Civil War. At the end of the War, Lord Derby had his head removed and put on display at Wigan, his headless body was interred at Ormskirk. Lathom House was demolished and there is no sign of it today. By this time, Miles Standish had sailed to America on the Mayflower. His job was to head up the militia looking after the Quakers on board. Miles took with him a girl from Ormskirk who he subsequently married - she died within the year. Miles then invited her sister over from Ormskirk, and he married her. I believe that the Mayflower sailed from Holland to Plymouth, which would back up what you said. Ricky Cooper. PS I drove through Miles Standish forest when I was in the States. The Archaeologists are now excavating for Lathom House. There is a small graveyard outside the bounds of Ormskirk contaning Quakers.
