Hi Pauline Would really appreciate any info you can find that might have had Nathaniel P. Cooper as a son. I know nothing of his parentage and only know he was b in NY abt 1806. He married Sophia Lucinda Cowles, dau of Russell Cowles/Coles and Wilhelmina Peper. My sister has traced the Pepers back to Holland. Anyway, Nathaniel and Sophia m in 1835 and left for PA where my gr grandfather, Hulbert DeWitt was born. James FitzJames was b to the couple in 1839, Frankfort, KY. My main focus is to see if I can locate parentage of Nathaniel. The P. , his middle initial may be Parda or Pardee but have no proof. I don't know anything about a Sarah Cooper marrying a Peper. She doesn't show up in what my sister found, maybe a later generation. I will be gone from late today until June 3 so no hurry. I have seen pictures of the area around Pultneyville and see that it is very beautiful. I do so wish I could travel there but age (78) and distance make it impossible for me to do so. Lets see what I can find for you by early next week. Griffith Cooper was a Quaker, active in the underground railroad, and had a hidden room in the top floor of his house. A lady by the name of Eleanor Fairbanks, alert at 96 or so, remembers playing there as a child. According to my Cousin Ken Cooper Sr, who passed away a couple of years ago, age 94 or so, remembers his father and one of the other Coopers trying to find a connection, but could not. Ken Sr. pointed out to me where the Coles or Cowles family lived, as they were neighbors. Griffith Cooper was descended from the Camden county, NJ, Coopers I think, and according to something I read, the progenitor of that family was a cousin to the Cooperstown Cooper family. Pultneyville is a beautiful hamlet on the coast of Lake Ontario, and it had a very active port at its beginning. Items were shipped back and forth to Canada, Oswego, a! nd other places. Pultneyville was very remote, and it was rough living, but as my cousin Ken said, the people that lived there, traveled a lot by water, which opened many other areas to them, and much more easily than traveling by foot or horse. Someone quite a few years ago asked me about a Sarah Cooper or French marrying a Pepper. Was that you?
