    2. Pardon me for eaves-dropping. Does the name Washington Cooper appear anywhere in your Cooper/Pennsylvania research, other than the Cooper family at Fallowfield? Later census figures indicate Washington was born in PA in 1800. I can't find anything more about him until he appears in Nashville, TN, getting married, in 1832. "Gramps" has been my nemesis since I started searching about eight years ago. Thanks.

    3. I noticed the name Obadiah on your email. I haven't the foggiest notion if this would be of help, but a few years ago I was researching the wrong Cooper line but a relative I located put me right. Anyway that earlier line began with Obadiah Cooper, the tailor of Albany, NY. He was there in 1713 and begat a long and numerous family, with so many Obadiahs in it that it is possible one could beyours. All this came from a book called, I think, History of the Coopers in America. 3. Thank You, I appreciate the Help, You could be right about Jacob/John, at this point I have very little to go on. I have a copy of a Bio that says her Fathers name was John Cooper, I also have the 1850 and 1860 Census for Ohio and she is listed as being born in Pennsylvania. I really do not know where in Pa? The Bio also says that she is of German Descent? but I agree with the earlier suggestion that the names Mary Polly Cooper and John Cooper sound much more Irish/Scotch than German. In the same book there is a Bio on an Obadiah Cooper who was born in Washington County, Pa, He married a Sarah McCoy and they had several children who were all born about the same time as my Mary Polly. We have a copy of John Best's Day Book and Obadiah Cooper is listed as owing John money for supplies. Also Obadiah II and his wife Elizabeth Vantilburg (The 1st Obadiah's Grandson) is listed on the same Census as John Best and Mary Polly Cooper. So these families knew each other and they both came from Pa. Since Obadiah came from Washington County, Pa, I have concentrated my search there, but so far I cannot even Prove the families are connected. I just received a copy of the Marriage Record of John Best and Polly (That is how she is listed) Cooper. Unfortunately there are No clues on the Record. They were married before the County recorded the Parents on the Record. I am trying to find a copy of John Best's will in Carroll County, Oh, but there was a fire in the Courthouse and I am not sure if this record is available. Do you know if there is an Obadiah Cooper in your line? Since he is the only clue I have to work with at this time, I am trying to find out who his Parents were and who his siblings were? He may have had a Brother named John? Any Suggestions would be welcome?? Thanks Again Wendy Rdanatwell@aol.com wrote: Wendy- My Coopers also come from PA so I thought I'd see if I could be of help. If Polly was married to John Best in 1819, one has to assume she traveled to Ohio before that time, probably with family. So her father may be in the Stark Co. area in 1820, if he was still alive. I see there is a Jacob Cooper in the 1820 & 1830 census of Stark Co, OH. In a different branch of my family the names John and Jacob were used interchangably. Could this be Polly's father? Osnaburg, Stark Co, OH 1820 Jacob Cooper 1m 0-10 1m 26-45 1m 45> 1f 0-10 1f 10-16 1f 16-26 1f 26-45 1f 45> Osnaburg, Stark Co, OH 1830 Jacob Cooper 1m 10-15 1m 15-20 1m 70-80 1f <5 1f 15-20 1f 20-30 1f 60-70 These census records suggest Jacob Cooper was born 1750 to 1760 and his wife was born 1760 to 1770. They are an ideal age to be parents of Polly b.1794. Polly would probably have been listed as age 0-10 in the 1800 census: There is a John Cooper in Fallowfield, Washington Co, PA with a female 0-10 There is a John Cooper in Straban, Washington Co, PA with 2 females 0-10 Hope this helps some. 3. It is very possible that John Cooper is Scotch-Irish or Scot. It is a common Scot's name. My father had told me that we were German-Dutch. I think this is because his mother was full German and when he asked, that is what he was told. When I did my research, I found out that my paternal line is Scot > Scotch Irish. I too have a Cooper in my family. My first known grandmother, Nancy, (Sara), Cooper was born in Scotland in 1727 and died in Salem, Washington County NY in 1802. John Cooper lived on the next farm in Salem. I don't know his relationship, but I suspect either father or brother. Family lore says that the Cooper and Hanna families went to Ulster to live on land granted to a Cooper ancestor for service as an officer in the English army, supposedly at the siege of Derry. I have never found anything to support this lore. I hope this helps. 3. Hi, I am looking for information about my GGG-Grandmother, Mary "Polly" Cooper She was born about 1794 in Pennsylvania and died about 1863 in Sugar Creek, Putnam County, Ohio She married John Best on May 20, 1819 in Stark County, Ohio We only have a few clues about her, in a Bio written about her Husband John Best, the Bio says that she was born in Pennsylvania, her fathers name is John Cooper and the family was supposedly of German Descent. One other Possible Clue may be to an Obadiah Cooper, he was born in Washington County, Pennsylvania. He also moved to Ohio with his wife Susan McCoy. He is listed in John Bests Day Book, so he obviously knew John Best. Obadiah's Grandson Obadiah also lived near John Best and Mary Cooper in the 1850 Carroll County, Ohio Census. I believe that Obadiah, Sr. may be my Mary "Polly's" Uncle? If this is true then Obadiah would have to have a brother named John Cooper? This is only a Theory for now.... If anyone can help, Please let me know???? Thank You Wendy Ramirez wendyramirez2608@yahoo.com

    1. Re: [COOPER] Where?
    2. Hi Joyce, In answer to your question : James COWPER, yeoman, died 1611 and left his farm to his son : John COWPER, yeoman, who died 1617. The farm was situated in the village of Burton, Cheshire County, England. At this time, the name was spelled phonetically and could appear as COWAP, COWPER, COWP, COOPER etc. Hope this helps, Ricky Cooper. As an aside there is an American serviceman buried a couple of miles from Burton in the hamlet of Shotwick. He was killed in WW1 and is buried within the church. I believe that there is a plaque in his memory - I think he was an airman. Further evidence of much earlier conflict can be seen in the church doorway where grooves have been left in the sandstone by Cheshire Archers sharpening their arrowheads.
