I am descended from Cornelius Cooper and his father, Cornelius Cooper. They are my 4th and 5th great grandfathers. Cornelius Cooper (born about 1774, Granville Co., N.C.). Married Jane Wood of Maryland. Died October 01, 1855, Slidell, St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana Cornelius Cooper (born about 1740-1808), planter and merchant, labeled Free Person of Color in the Fishing Creek District, Granville Co., N.C. tax list taken by Zacharias Higgs, 1786. Lord Granville Land Grant. Rev. Book C., pg 77-79, mentions "sundries furnished & cash to the Militia of N.C., Va., and S.C" during the Revolution. Listed as a Patriot of the American Revolution. Cornelius's father, William Cooper, was born about 1725 in Virginia or North Carolina. He was a trader, guide, scout and commissioner for Daniel Boone and Gen. James Robertson. He died abot 1783 defending what is now Nashville. I have a great deal of information on my Coopers but lack specifics on their origins. Does anyone have more information on these families? Does anyone have proof of their Indian heritage? Thank you, Leila Mayberry

Oddly, it appears in an Ohio newspaper.... _______________________________________________________________________________ Defiance Democrat, Defiance, Ohio, Saturday, March 11, 1854; page 4 Commander James B. Cooper, of the U. S. Navy, died at Haddonfield, N.J., on Sunday, the 5th, aged ninety-three years. He entered the naval service on the 9th day of July, 1812, as sailing master, and after the peace; received a lieutenant's commission from President Mon- roe, and in September, 1841 became a com- mander. He was the last survivor of "Lee's Legion," so celebrated in the revolutionary war, and participated in many of the exciting scenes, during the struggle for independence. ______________________________________________________________________________ - Ed

Hi, I recently joined this list because I have begun to research my great-great-great grandfather's line, James M. COOPER born 1799 NJ died 1868. He was a gunner in the US Navy commissioned in 1837 and served in the Navy all his life. In 1861 he and his family were stationed at Pensacola, Florida when they surrended to the Confederate army. I've also learned that he served on the USS St. Lawarence in the 1850's which was the flag ship of the Pacific Squadron. From what I have been able to piece together so far, it looks like he was married twice. Here is the family.... 1st wife ??????? - children: 1. Mary Ann Cooper b. 1829 PA d. 1865 NJ married James Ray MINUGH 2nd wife Hannah ????? b. 1822 NJ d. 1909 - children: 1. Rebecca Morgan Cooper b. abt. 1843 NY married Loudon CAMPBELL 2. James Benjamin Cooper b. abt. 1850 NJ 3. Fanny V. Cooper b. 1852 NJ d. 1929 married Benjamin F. KEYSER 4. Helena Cooper b. abt. 1855 NJ d. 1942 married Robert BRADFORD 5. Griffith Morgan Cooper b. 1857 NJ d. 1917 married Amelia C. 6. Stephen Cooper b. abt. 1866 NJ It is looking very likely that his father was Capt. James B. COOPER who was born in New Jersey in 1761 and who died at Haddonfield, NJ in 1854. Capt. Cooper was married 1st to Rebecca MORGAN and 2nd to Elizabeth CLEMENT. From what I have been able to learn, Capt. Cooper had four sons who were in the Navy, Griffith Morgan Cooper, Benjamin Cooper, Alexander Hamilton Cooper and I think possibly my gggrandfather, James M. Cooper. Does anyone know the names of the children of Capt. James B. Cooper and is anyone else interested in the Haddonfield/Camden Coopers? - Ed

Lois, this was a conversion test offered by FTDNA to individual who have used one of the following four companies: Relative Genetics, DNAHeritage, Oxford Ancestors and Genebase, it was not for upgrades for people whose DNA has already been analyzed by FTDNA. WOW ! Thanks for all the info. Until recently, I thought my Jasper Newton Cooper was the son of Andrew Jackson Cooper. But when I found him in the 1910 census his mother NICEY was living with her. That was not Andrew J's wife. So I am back to zero. It appears that my Jasper's mother was a widow who lived with her inlaws. Either that or she had a lot of kids out of wedlock. The names she gives her kids are VERY similar to Samuel D's kids. Even his wife has the same name but years differ unless I made a mistake. I put together Alabama COOPER census records into one channel on my Familytreemaker so I could monitor them all. Below is that info. So keep in mind there is NO KNOWN CONNECTION of any of the families below, just an account of census info. DONNA. I have printed your reply and will research. I have no information other than posted and I am trying to tie into researched Coopers out of North Carolina. Will talk with John Michael O'Melia, the Georgia researcher with a Cooper database to die for! The Robert Cooper with Uriah 1830 sounds really promising. Hope I can turn up a connection. I could not find Robert M Cooper in 1860 census in AL w a wife Hannah or any of the named children. So all I know is he was in Montgomery, AL in 1862. Sheryl Cooper Hicks

WHICH COOPER DIED CIRCA 1860s that was married to NICY and lived in AL? Hi, I am trying to locate information on this family that settled in Alabama circa 1850s. Thanks for any help in advance. Please feel free to forward to anyone you think may be related. * URIAH COOPER born abt 1794 in NC was in Carroll County GA in 1830 with a spouse and 2 boys and 2 girls in household. He moved to Talladega Co. AL by the 1850 census where he was listed with wife: Nicy children: Wiley, America, Christopher, Leviann, Elizabeth, Susan and Uriah Jr. In the 1860 AL, Talladega : Uriah 61 NC, Nicey 51 GA, Elizabeth, Levyann, Susan & Christopher, all kids born in ALA. Now before the 1870 one of his sons or brothers died (probably in Civil War). This son or brother was also marrried to a NICY. This is based on the fact that Uriah's Nicy was born 1807-1809 and would be 50 to 60 yrs old when "some" of these kids were born. Note the jump in children's birth dates from 1848 to 1860 and the appearance of 2 sets of twins. So, this other woman Nicy E. Cooper and her children are living with Uriah and Nicy in the 1870 Talladega census: 1870 AL, Talladega: [very hard to read] Uriah 1794, Nicey b.1807, Nicey E. b.1837, Zarow?Sara? 1848, Ruthanne 1860, *J.N.* b.1862, Evelena 1867, William R 1867, Charles 1869, Sara A 1869. *J.N. Cooper born 1862 is my great-grandfather. In the 1910 Chilton County census J.N. (Jasper Newton) is listed b.1862 with his wife and family including my grandmother Florence Cornelia Cooper but the good thing is that his mother NICY COOPER is in the household age 74 making her born 1836 AL. They are living in Talladega Co. on "McGowan's Ferry Rd." My great grandfather was married to Elizabeth PASCHALL whose mother was Margaret Elizabeth McGOWAN. ***Someone out there may think they know which male Cooper may have died leaving a wife Nicy. I would be greatful for ANY leads. Again, please feel free to forward to others or email me personally. Donna Cuzze dcuzze@earthlink.net

I've "rescued" a group of old photographs including two large group photographs from New Jersey which appear to have been taken in front of a hotel, restaurant, or resort. A sign hanging in front of the building appears to say "WAYMAN'S COTTAGE" with additional signs attached to the building saying "Boarding" and "Table Board". The people in the photographs are identified as follows: * Joe WIER * Helen WIER * Helen PIERCE * Charlie WIER (woman) * Clair KOBLER * Mr. WIER & Child * Mrs. WIER & Child * Miss Ethel GRIFFITH & Harrold KOBLER * Mrs. PIERCE & Beatrice KOBLER * Mrs. COOPER & Child from Brooklyn * Mr. C. P. KETTERER from NY * Miss Nellie RYSON * Miss Lottie PIERCE * Mrs. C. P. KETTERER * Mrs. S. P. KOBLER * Miss Jennie PIERCE * Miss Annie PIERCE There are two copies of this same photograph with the photograph appearing to have been taken in the 1890's or early 1900's. Subjects range in age from toddler to 50's. Four additional photographs appear to include some of these same people including: * Group of 5 women, no studio or loc, 1900's * Group of 14 people, no studio or loc, 1900's * Unidentified women in her 60's, no studio or loc, 1890's or 1900's * Unidentified woman in her 50's, no studio or loc, 1900's With limited research I was able to find information on WIER and KOBLER Families which may fit those in the photograph. That information follows: 1880 census of Neptune, NJ: Joseph R. WIER, age 51, born NJ, a Restaurant Owner, parents born Ireland Mary WIER, wife, age 52, born NJ, Keeping House, parents born England Joseph R. WIER, son, age 23, born NJ, Keeping Restaurant Annie H.
