    3. I thought I would forward the following to both the COOPER and SMITH lists. I posted this to the Yorkshire, England list and thought I should forward to these lists because descendants of both my COOPERs and SMITHs settled in Canada and the United States. Some of Matthew SMITH's sons used the spelling SMYTH and others used SMITH. Chris Bradshaw bradshawchris@home.com ----- Original Message ----- From: "Chris Bradshaw" <bradshawchris@home.com> To: "Andrew Sefton" <andy@andysefton.freeserve.co.uk>; <YORKSGEN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: May 16, 2000 10:37 PM Subject: COOPER/SMITH/JACKSON/ATKINSON/LENG/WILSON/BARKER/BRECKON/GRIME et al Hi Andrew... Robert COOPER married Elizabeth HALTON 5 June 1814 at Seamer by Stokesley, North Yorkshire, England.Their eldest daughter Ann COOPER was christened 12 May 1815 at Seamer by Stokesley, North Yorkshire. She married Mathew SMITH 9 Sept 1832 at Lastingham, North Yorkshire and moved to Ontario, Canada in 1842. Mathew SMITH was christened 9 Oct 1808 at Rosedale, North Yorkshire. One of their grandchildren was named Halton Cooper SMYTH after his grandparents and another grandson was named Halton SMITH. You may notice that after the SMITHs came to Canada some used the SMITH spelling and some used SMYTH. There are even some family tombstones that use both spellings. Supposedly when Mathew SMITH's eldest son, Robert SMYTH (former mayor of Lindsay, Ontario in the 1890s), returned to England in the 1860s-70s regarding a will or something like that, their "claim" was denied because the signatures of family members didn't match. Personally, I think this idea about a will is probably the usual family lore hokum, but you never know... Anyway, since that time several members of Mathew's family used SMYTH and others used SMITH. Mathew himself used SMITH until his death 15 June 1885 in Durham County, Ontario. Two of his sons, James Cooper SMYTH (who was my great-grandfather) and his brother William SMITH were school principals in Brantford Ontario. Robert COOPER was the son of Jonathan COOPER and Jane DOWSON who married 4 April 1782 at Danby, North Yorkshire before moving to Lastingham/Rosedale/Farndale, North Yorkshire when Robert was christened 5 Jan 1790. Their children: Jonathan christened 12 Sep 1783 Danby, North Yorkshire, England Mary christened 22 March 1785 Danby Jane christened 26 May 1787 Danby John christened 9 Dec 1788 Danby Robert christened 5 Jan 1790 Lastingham Eleanor christened 15 Jul 1792 Lastingham John christened 19 Feb 1795 Lastingham. Some of his children or grandchildren settled in Arkansas Thomas christened 4 April 1797 Lastingham Mark Dowson christened 29 Sep 1799 Lastingham Hannah christened 6 Apr 1802 Lastingham Maria christened 30 Sep 1803 Lastingham I think Jane married Thomas WEBSTER; Thomas married Hannah LENG; Mark Dowson married Mary WILSON; Hannah married John ATKINSON; and Maria married Joseph BRECKON. Some of the others died during infancy. Children of John SMITH and Mary BARKER: Elizabeth christened 14 Nov 1796 Rosedale, North Yorkshire, England Hannah christened 10 Mar 1799 Rosedale John christened 31 May 1801 Rosedale Jane christened 20 Feb 1803 Rosedale Ann christened 3 Mar 1805 Rosedale William christened 4 Dec 1806 Rosedale Mathew christened 9 Oct 1808 Rosedale 1 or 2 sons moved to Pennsylvania abt 1900. Robert christened 12 Aug 1810 Rosedale Betty christened 28 Jan 1813 Rosedale I think Ann married Roger JACKSON; Ann married George BENNISON; Betty married Horatio PETCH. The others I am unsure of. These are the children of John SMITH and Mary BARKER who married 1 Dec 1795 at Rosedale, North Yorkshire, England. I think Mary is the daughter of William BARKER and Mary GRIME. I do not know the parentage of my John SMITH (talk about your needle in a haystack!), but I suspect he may be the son of your Matthew SMITH and Mary HELM. If so, he would have been born about 1750 and would be about 45 years old at the time of his marriage to Mary BARKER. That might be wishful thinking and more looking needs to be done. What do you think? 3. Woody, I copied the Cooper book from the library. There are over 60 p-ages. In regard to your research on Rush, there is no listing for any Rush however there is a listing of Bennetts of Durant, MS. If you will let me know what Bennett names you are researching I will be happy to send you what information is listed. There are no Johnson's listed. I could photocopy the book for you but with so many pages at 15cents a page you might just want the pages referencing the Bennetts. If you will e-mail me what Cooper's you are researching Iwill look that up for you also Ruby ---------- > From: WRUSH550@aol.com > To: COOPER-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [COOPER-L] First Cooper Family in America > Date: Tuesday, May 16, 2000 9:12 AM > > Ruby, > I would be interested in seeing a copy of your information in the book, > The Cooper Family. 3. Hi Cooper cousins, I decided to try this site out. I was looking for land patens for Alston Cooper. None were found. However his brother Jonathan has three tracts listed. Just pull up MS and type in his name. Enjoy. There were some more of the Cooper boys next door in AL. Just a few miles away. Will take to see if they are listed later.
