    1. [COOPER-L] Sterling Cooper born North Carolina 1827
    2. Mindy Bell
    3. Hi, I have been off the mailing list for awhile and thought I'd post information that I have found. My great-great grandfather, Sterling Cooper was born in Raleigh, Wake County, North Carolina on February 12, 1827. His father's name was Benjamin Franklin Cooper. The only info that I have about Benjamin Franklin Cooper is that he was born in North Carolina as was Sterling's mother (name unknown) who was also born in North Carolina. According to new information from an elderly cousin, Sterling came to the Vigo County, Indiana area alone around 1850. He married Mary Woodard and was living with her mother and family in the 1850 Vigo County, Indiana census. Mary Woodard died about 1852. Sterling served as a teamster in the 6th Indiana Infantry in the Civil War. He married Amanda Shaffer August 18, 1870 in Urbana, Champaign County, Illinois. They had five children, James Fred Cooper born 1871, Benjamin Franklin (Frank) Cooper born 1873, Orpha Caroline (Callie) Cooper Hylman born 1875, Daisy Nancy Cooper born 1878 and William Phillip Cooper born 1881. Sterling Cooper died March 25, 1920 in Trilla, Coles County, Illinois. If anyone has any information about this family I would love to compare notes. I have not been able to find any information about Sterling or his parents before 1850. There are Sterling Cooper's and Benjamin Franklin Cooper's in North Carolina and Virginia but I have not been able to document any of them to my family. Thanks, Mindy Bell

    3. I have just returned from IL, returning Emma Shepherd's 3 inch notebook of data to her, and enjoying a wonderful visit with her. We traveled through Haywood Co., TN, but unfortunately the timing prevented meeting with Reese Moses, genealogy columnist from Brownsville and the original contributor of the "little ledger" of family birth listings of the early Bertie Co., NC Cader. We did have a nice phone conversation though. I was extremely eager to quiz her about the connection of her Brownsville protégé(actual owner of the ledger) to a Cooper line. Her answer to the question, "Which line is Carol's family from?" was:...NONE-as far as we can tell!!! (And this is after seven years of research on her part, and the ledger has been in her husband's family for three generations!) However, we proceeded on into Hopkinsville, Christian Co., KY where I did find actual record of Cader and Sarah BYARS marriage and discovered Sarah's mother was Elizabeth BLAIR.(father Stripling Byars)Also found quite a few land records which I will post seperately. I don't want to make this excessively long,(and I do have a tendency to "get all the details")but, to get to the point, I wanted to impress upon all the other folks who have also looked at the Big Picture from my previous single sighted perspective just how CLOSE the states of TN, KY, IN and IL all are right there on the western edge, as well as TN, KY, WV, VA,NC, SC,GA, AL, MS, etc. on the south and west. So, after driving these midwestern states in an afternoon,(compared to taking all day to get across Texas! No brag, just fact. <Grin>)I have a whole new perspective on how it was not that hard for our ancestors to be scattered across seven states, with one son going one way and six others, another(each). SO, that said, I will give you a rundown of what Emma has concluded, and then post the sources to go with it. First of all, from our personal interest, the John C. Cooper whose will was read May 1829, Monroe Co., MS is John COTTON COOPER, b. 1758 Spartenburg, SC the 4th child of David COOPER b. 1725 Warwickshire, ENG and his wife Elizabeth ("Betsy") WILDER? 3. Dear Subscribers to the COOPER Surname Mailing List/Discussion Group, After searching for some time for the parents of Jacob COOPER, born 16 Nov 1762 in West Springfield, Massachusetts, I found the answer in ~SPOONER Saga~ by Esther Littleford Woodworth-Barnes, page 17. Jacob COOPER married Rebecca SPOONER, 30 Sep 1792, in New London, Connecticut. Jacob COOPER was recorded ~at birth~ as ISAAC COOPER, son of Samuel COOPER and Mercy JONES, in West Springfield, massachusetts. Samuel COOPER was the son of Dr. Samuel COOPER, who was the son of Thomas COOPER, Jr., who was the son of Thomas COOPER the Immigrant [also known as Thomas COOPER of Springfield, Massachusetts]. Thus, Jacob COOPER was a great great grandson of Thomas COOPER the Immigrant. The fact that Jacob COOPER's name was Isaac COOPER at birth explains why I was not able to find his parents. But this raises the puzzling issue of why his name was changed, and when. Jacob COOPER [born Isaac] served in the Revolutionary War, enlisting at West Springfield, when seventeen years of age. He served a nine-month enlistment, divided between Colonel John MOSELELY's Regiment and Colonel GREATON's Regiment. If any COOPER researchers have more information on the Isaac COOPER/Jacob COOPER name change, please contact me! I have traced Jacob COOPER from the Revolutionary War until his death in 1842, in Suffield, Connecticut. It is the period from birth to age seventeen that I am lacking. Thank You, Randal W. Cooper

I do not know much about Elvie but when my GGrandpa died she was listed in the obit as Mrs. Elvie Cooper of St. Paul. Any ancestors out there? Thanks, Dean Cameron

I've used the Beekman book for several lines of mine and I've alway's found it reliable. Also the author of this book is still living and has just published the 5th vol. Hope that helps! By the way, I'm looking for Alice Cowper/Cooper line, anything or where I should look? 3. I was ecstatic when I obtained copies of the Beekman Patents and Lampham's Cooper history. I thought "This is IT, I've found my ancestors!!" At least until I compared the two documents. Now I admit, I consider myself an amateur at genealogy, even though I've been researching for 30 years (hey, I started young), but just HOW does one resolve the discrepancy between the two documents? Beekman has many more dates and places, but Lampham "nailed" the names. Lampham's people are definitely my Coopers. It appears to me that somehow she has left a generation out, particularly in her discussion of the "William" line. I would very much appreciate any opinions, clarifications, guidance, etc., as to how I can clear this up. Perhaps the confusion is mine alone.
