    1. [COOPER-L] AMOS COOPER 1793 SC
    2. In response to Annie's question's and other's 1. Amos Cooper born 1793 in SC to Jacob and Rachel Cooper. 2. Do not know his middle name. Some people confuse him with his son Amos Pinckney Cooper because of incorrect data in Family Tree Maker Vol 8 Tree # 3590. 3. Married Nancy Turner daughter of Henry and Nancy Turner of SC. 4. Had at least two children by this first marriage. Jane Cooper born 1822 SC married Luther Rice Cantrell. Tumal Frances Cooper born 1836 SC married John P. Cantrell, Younger brother of Luther Rice Cantrell. (Seems there should be more?) 5. Moved to Marion County Alabama after 1836 and purchased at least 80 acres of land on Sept 10, 1838. 6. Somewhere between 1836 and 1839 lost his wife Nancy Turner. 7. Married Elizabeth Williams Cantrell born 1820 SC, sister of his two son-in laws. 8. Do not know where the middle name Williams came from. 9. The three Cantrell's, Luther Rice, John P and Elizabeth Williams were children of Martin Cantrell and Catherine Rice of 96th district, Spartenburg SC who also migrated to Marion County Alabama and bought land. 10. Had a son Amos Pinckney Cooper born Dec 10, 1839 in Marion County AL. 11. Descendants of Luther Rice and John P Cantrell show Amos Pinckney as being the third and last son of Amos marriage to Nancy Turner. Descendants of Amos Pinckney show him as being the first son of Amos marriage to Elizabeth Williams Cantrell. I do not know. I do know that the picture's I have of Amos Pickney and his sister or half sisterJane show remarkable facial resemblance to each other. Some descendants of Amos Cooper also claim Elizabeth Williams Cantrell was the widow of Martin Cantrell and not his daughter. Do not believe this to be true as I have found data indicating that Martin Cantrell was still living much later. 12. Assume the middle name Pinckney came from SC Where Pinckney district was formed in 1795 embracing the present counties of Union and York and part of Cherokee. Could also have come from a plantation owner named Pinckney in SC. 13. Had four more children by Elizabeth Williams Cantrell. Juliana 1844, Catherine Willams 1846, Mary (Molly) 1852 and Elizabeth (Sug) 1855. 14. His farm was valued at $1200 in the 1850 census. 15. Purchased two more tracts of land in 1854 on the Marion/Lamar County Line. 16. Purchased 311 more acres in Marion County on Mar 1, 1858. 17. Land valued at $1040 with $16,465 worth of personal estate in 1860 census. His son Amos Pickney's land was valued at $1000 and he claimed $1763 of personal estate during the same census. 18. Died sometime after the 1860 census. 19. To answer Anna's question, Pink Cantrell was the great grandson of Amos Cooper and first cousin once removed of Amos Pinckney Cooper as well as half grandnephew depending upon whether Amos Pinckney's birth mother was Nancy Turner or Elizabeth Williams Cantrell. Since Pink Cantrell is descendant of the first marriage then he would be the grandson of Nancy Turner and grandnephew of the second wife Elizabeth Williams Cantrell. Confusing is'nt it ? 20. This Cantrell bunch that married Amos first two daughter's took a wagon train and moved to Texas after the civil war. I have been in contact with several of their descendants. Hope this helps to clear some things up Danny Cooper Byrd

    3. Looking for information on the following people and dates. They are in a listing of family birthdates, deaths and marriages for the family of Cunningham Sample Cooper, who was born in York Co., PA in 1788 and moved east, (OH,KY, IA) finally dying in Californiain 1863. These names have puzzled us for years... Levi PORTER B. Oct 11 1827 Mary Jain PORTER B. Jan 26 1828 Henryetta PORTER B. Sep 12 1875 Daniel PORTER born Feb 10 1825 Elizabeth COOPER, b June 24 1808, Daniel PORTER and Elizabeth COOPER married Jan 7, 1821 Levi PORTER died July 23 1822 Daniel COOPER died Dec 14 1857 aged 26y 10m 4d (this would make him born 10 Feb 1831 JH) Jane COOPER died May 13 1827 age 46y 4m 21d (this would make her born Dec 23, 1780 JH) Francis Wise COOPER died May 2 1816 We would appreciate anything on any of these people. We do not know for sure where these names came from, although it appears they were written down by a daughter of Cunningham Cooper and we think that they are connected to her family, somehow. Appreciate any help. Joyce Hagerty

    1. Re: [COOPER-L] John W. Cooper
    2. Tom, My apoliges on the date of death misprint of your GGG Grandfather and my GGG Uncle Alston Cooper. 1829 is incorrect as you know. Alston died in 1858 in Tupelo, Mississippi according to some of the Massey descendants. Also, there is a misprint concerning the date of death of Amos Cooper, Alstons brother. It was not 1839. Amos had to have died around 1859. The incorrect dates came from Family Tree Maker Vol 8 #3590. This volume was put out by the wife of one of my first cousin's prior to further research and really needs to be updated. Danny Cooper Byrd

    1. Re: [COOPER-L] John W. Cooper
    2. Velda Jo, If John W. Cooper is of our line, he would by virtue of his birthdate, probably be one of the grandson's of the Cooper brothers that migrated from SC and Hall Cty GA to Monroe or Ittawabia County Miss. That would be Jonathan, Alston or possibly John or Issac Washington. We know the first two migrated there. Am quite sure one or both of the latter two did. Another brother, my GGG Grandfather Amos migrated to the Marion County Ala/Monroe Cty Miss State Line. If they all did, which I believe is true at this point, that would total five brother's that migrated. They all lived relatively close although seperated at times by State and County Lines that moved over periods of time. Amos's line, I know stayed in Marion County (my line). The majority if not all of Jonathan and Alston's line moved to Ark after their deaths, 1865 and 1858 respectively. These lines were heavily connected to Massey's. It is possible that John ( JW or IW in 1850 census was connected to a Massey- NO Proof as yet, again I suspect your's is a grandson of one of these brothers.) There is an IW on the Marion Cty, Ala 1850 census, next county. I suspect the definite IW in Marion County is Issac Washington and that the one in Monroe County which is hard to discern as to J or I is JW or John, the missing brother. If John and Issac were in the area as I suspect, I do not know if they went on to Ark or stayed in the Ala/Miss area. These brothers were 5 of 10 children of Jacob and Rachel Cooper of Union SC. Jacob was one of 11 children of William and Elizabeth (Lydia, Lidy) Clark of Bucks County PA and Union Cty SC. By virture of the number of children, there are obviously thousands of descendants from this line, not to mention the descendants from the large number of children that their forefathers had. Joseph is the only brother that we know for sure stayed in SC. He married Cassandra Fowler and died in SC in 1868. Do not know what happened to Eli. Some researcher's feel he is the Eli Cooper that went west. There is another Eli in the SC area but belongs to a Cooper family we have not connected to as of yet. Let's see, That's seven boy's right? Now to the girls. Hannah married Jesse Cole and moved with Alston to Hall Cty Ga. Not sure after that. Lydia, named for her grandmother moved with Alston to Hall Cty, Ga. According to researcher Carroll Smith she is listed in early Hall County History. May have married Hiram Jones and remained in Hall Cty according to probate records. Sally married a "B" Vaughn in SC. She is last listed in Jacobs 1829 Estate Paper's. "Baby Mary", a child from Jacob's first marriage was given up for adoption. It is assumed that her mother died at birth. Paper's show that Hugh and Sarah Ely took her under adoption contract in 1788. Further research seems to indicated that Hugh and Sarah were relatives of this Cooper family. I have copie's of the will's of many of these Cooper's to include picture's of Amos Cooper's line back to Amos himself, born 1793. They are also preserved in the Marion County, Alabama Heritage Book published earlier this year. If you would like a copy I can get the address for you. The cost is around $60. Information on Many of these Cooper ancestor's can be found in the Union County SC Heritage Book. I plan on attempting to get a copy of that. I have copies of some of this courtesy of Dr. Carroll Smith of Greenville SC, one of our long lost cousin's. Well hon, the ball is in your part of the court. She what you can find to help connect us. I'll continue to look as a have time. Stay in touch. Danny Cooper Byrd

    3. Hi Barbara, No I don't, that is one of the things that I am trying to find out. I didn't even know about him until my cousin in Ohio, went to Ft Wayne and found Jesse, Emily and him in the 1870 census. He was a brother to my grandfather Arthur Cooper. I had an uncle evidently named after him. William Wesley Cooper born 1913. I have searched everywhere trying to find someone that may be descended from him with no luck. Thought I would keep posting about once a month. He may have disappeared with some of my other lost ancestors, grin. ----- Original Message ----- From: <BMcgee1566@aol.com> To: <COOPER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, June 14, 2000 11:13 PM Subject: Re: [COOPER-L] William Wesley Cooper-TN > Linda, > > I am always fascinated by this query.
