    1. [COOPER-L] Newfield, NY
    2. Donald S Richmond
    3. To Justine Mann, Thanks very much for your reply to my inquiry on the various Cooper families of Newfield, NY. I am trying to identify the parents of my parernal grandmother Zaida (Scott) Richmond. The parents of Zaida were John Scott and Sally COOPER. They are buried in Bly cemetery, Marcellus, Mich. but I have been unable to obtain death certificates for either. Zaida was born in Veteran (the present town of Horseheads), Chemung county, New York in 1847. I found her parents and family living at Veteran in the 1850 census and at Catherine, then Chemung county, NY in the 1840 census. >From records filed at the Cass county, Mich. court house I have determined that John Scott was born in 1800 and Sally Cooper was born in 1802. From death certificates of a number of their children, the place of birth of John Scott was Scotland and the birthplace of Sally Cooper was Penn. They had a daughter Jane born in New York in 1827 thus their place of marriage was undoubtably New York. Searching thru the New York 1830 census I located a John Scott with wife and two young children living at Newfield, Tompkin county which would have fit their description completely. What is more fitting was the fact that they were living among a group of five COOPER families, and the three younger members of the family were in the same age group as Sally, 20 to 30 years of age. The boys names were Philip, Warren and Abel, all with children under 5 years of age. William Cooper, who appeared to be the father of these boys (age 50-60), was living among these families and still had 3 children 20-30, 2 children 15-20 and one child 10-15 in his household. Also nearby lived a John Cooper and wife, both age 70-80 who may have been the grand- parents. I haven't as yet checked the 1840 census of Newfield to see if these families still lived there but would appreciate hearing from you to know whether any of this family might tie into your ancestry. 2. Gary, My ggggrand father, Jonathan Cooper, was from VA. He was born 16 April 1818/19. He moved to Gurnsey Co. Ohio where he and his wife Mary Mastin raised eight children. This family ended up in Missouri. Oral family history indicates his fathers name was also Jonathan and that this particular line was "of British descent" but I have been unable to substantiate this. If this sounds familiar contact me. Kathleen Church Gary, I would be surprised if we do not have a connection somewhere in VA. Haven't found it yet. If we do it would be through one of the seven children of Jonathan Cooper 1675-1769 and Sarah Hibbs 1692-1769 of Buck's County PA or one of Jonathans six siblings that I have recorded. Our Jane Orr married a Cooper and here is my little bit of research trying to locate her. If anyone on the list can help set me straight on this Cooper family, I would appreciate it. 2. Hello Jeanne, I have attached a letter I wrote to another cousin concerning this line of Cooper's . I also attached from my Family Tree Maker a descendant chart of this line. Could not attached the ancestors of this line back to England as the computer said there wasn't room. If you want the line all the way back I will send it in a later e-mail. Hope this comes across as readable. They can get distorted when copied and sent out. Please let me know what line you are and any info that you can give me to bring this line up to date. Have been looking for connections for some time. Would like to put together a book someday on all of these Cooper's. There is more info available on this family in the Ohio GenWeb and under another Land Record site. Take Care' Danny Cooper Byrd William Cooper Jr. William Cooper Jr., son of William Cooper ( b 1730 Bucks Cty Penn) and Elizabeth (Lydia) Clark was my gggg uncle. He was married to Mary Hunter. He and his 10 siblings were Quakers as their parents and grandparents Jonathan Cooper and Sarah Hibbs had been. After William Sr. moved to SC around 1772 the majority of the family eventually left the Quakers to become Baptist etc; William Jr and family remained Quakers, for how long I do not know at this point. In 1806 William Jr. led a wagon train from Union Cty SC to Ohio where they settled in Somerville close to present day Cincinnatti along the Indiana/Ohio state line. They were still Quakers at this time and according to minutes of Quaker meetings left due to their disdain of slavery. Most if not all of the other Cooper siblings spread out throughout the south from SC to GA, Ala, Miss, Ark, Tex, among possibly other states. Several owned slaves as opposed to William Jr. and the majority including my gg grandfather Amos Pinckney Cooper, grandson of William Jr's Brother Jacob, fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War. I am sure there were many Coopers from this same line, branches of Williams Sr.'s father Jonathan) that fought for the North. William Jr. and wife Mary Hunter are buried today with their children in a Presbyterian Churchyard in Somerville Ohio about 25 miles from my house. There is a 10 to 15 foot monument to them and their son Jonathan and some of their children there, among other related graves. William Sr. was a revolutionary war vet. I have a copy of his will. All of these Coopers were descendant of William Cooper and Thomasine Porter of Low Ellington, Yorkshire England who came over in 1699 with William Penn and the Quaker movement. Sarah Hibbs neice (see first paragraph) was the grandmother of James Fenimore Cooper, the first American author who wrote "The Last of The Mohicans". This Cooper line had as many as 7 to 15 children per descendant and is without doubt responsible for thousands of Cooper descendants in America today that came from the New Jersey, Penn area in the early 1700's.
