My Coopers were in the Clark/Crawford Co area of IL by the early 1800s having migrated there from PA, and I have yet to hook them up with any PA Coopers. I have a strong feeling that they were Quaker when in PA. There seems to be some connection with the Kenderdines and Lloyds, as well, who apparently traveled with some of the Coopers to Clark Co, IL from Montgomery Co, PA. Anyone know of any descendants of Jonathan & Sarah (Hibbs) Cooper that eventually ended up in IL, or even any of their lines that haven't been researched that could be possibilities for me? We have in our line given names such as Marmaduke, Theophilus, Cadwallader, Spencer, Kenderdine, etc., if that is a clue to anyone. Serious frustration has set in, especially considering that it will be some time before I can actually physically travel to PA to try to find records of these folks. Any help or suggestions for advancing my search would be delightfully received. I would be glad to send detailed information on my line to anyone who thinks we may be connected. Came into NJ and Buck's Cty Pa area just as the Jonathan/William Cooper and Sarah Hibbs bunch did. Will save your mail and look for connection's when studying the Quaker minute's. Danny Cooper Byrd

    3. Thanks for the response, Danny. No, I do not know Jeremiah's ancestry...that's what I'm looking for! Except for the Bible record, info on Jeremiah has come to me in "hints and clues" as you can see if you bring up my query posted Jun 7 at <http://genforum.genealogy.com/cooper/messages/5208.html>. Another "hint" I came onto sometime ago (and have misplaced!) was that of a Jeremiah of that timeframe (plus a cohort) was commissioned to do an extensive E-W survey across the top of VA, but backed out of the deal...that job then being taken over by 2 gents named Mason & Dixon...go figger! The old query I have cited in the aforementioned URL (possibly connecting Jeremiah's 'possible' father Joseph to Wm Franklin) is of particular interest since I have a handed-down family record showing a dau (Sarah Ann) of Wm Temple Franklin (illegit son of Wm) to have married Jeremiah's son Joseph. Re. the Jonathan/ Sarah lineage you provided, I have a Descendancy Chart from the LDS Ancestry File (c) 1987 showing Jonothon/Sarah's descendants, but have not been able to connect to that line, ie. their oldest son Jeremiah (b. 1716) could have endured 'til 1801, but would have been stretching it a bit to have fathered Joseph in 1777, tho' his son Jeremiah (b. 1746) certainly could have. However, I've not been able to positively ID that Jeremiah (who ma. Rebecca Perrill), and whose ancestry is the object of my search. There's a lot of Cooper lineage out there in cyberspace but even when connected to, has a problem of validity. They sure didn't take we researchers into consideration when naming their issue. I hope to speak to some of them someday about that very thing!/Jim Scruggs, Cocoa Bch, FL > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------ > > Subject: Re: [COOPER-L] Jeremiah Cooper-Winchester, VA > Date: Wed, 21 Jun 2000 22:49:11 EDT > From: Dbyrd000@aol.com > To: COOPER-L@rootsweb.com > > Jim, > Do you know who the parents or ancestor's of this Jeremiah Cooper, died > 1801 Winchester VA were. 2. Jim, Do you know who the parents or ancestor's of this Jeremiah Cooper, died 1801 Winchester VA were. If you do not, let me propose the following possibility. I have three son's of Jonathan Cooper 1675-1769 and Sarah Hibbs 1692-1769 that I have not recorded the children for as yet. These Cooper's and their children were Quakers and Millers. One of their son's, whom I have an extensive downline for moved to Laurens, Union County SC around 1760 1771 timeframe. This line of Cooper's starting in England, from the research I have so far, had the following numbers of children that match the names of your Jeremiah's children. Sarah 8, Joesph 9, Jacob 6, Levi 1, Jonathan 5, Elizabeth 5, Jeremiah 4, Rebecca 2, Mary 8, Atalina 0, Israel 1. Jonathan and Sarah Hibbs as well as Jonathan's family that came from England lived in NJ and Byberry, Bucks County PA before speading out over the US. Hinshaw's Encyclopedia of Quaker minutes possibly could connect these families. I'll look at this when I get a chance if you think it is feasible. Takes me a while to research though as I do not get as much time as I would wish. The names of the three boy's are Jeremiah b 1715 married Rebecca Wildman, Jonathan b 1721 married Sarah Stockdale and Jacob b 1728 married ?????. Danny Cooper Byrd

In May, we had over 149 million page views (according to Nielsen NetRatings combined home and work statistics), sent over 155 million e-mails, and handled over two million downloads of files from the various archives hosted at RootsWeb. Everyone, take a bow! This is an incredible community of genealogists, and the advances we're all making in our research due to the sharing that occurs here is unprecedented. Bad news: The more popular RootsWeb becomes, the more costly it is to simply stay alive and online. Even with your generous support, expenses continue to exceed revenue. We ran up a truly scary loss last year. Without outside help, it's not clear how long we'd be able to go on like this. Good news: MyFamily.com (you may know them better as Ancestry.com) recognizes the importance of the genealogical community that has grown here at RootsWeb, and wants that community to continue to thrive. They're excited to provide the financial stability we need to ensure RootsWeb will be around for years to come. Brian and I are pleased by Ancestry.com's coming involvement with RootsWeb. Now we can all focus on helping each other on the mailing lists and message boards, uploading our GEDCOMs,

    3. I'm sorry, Ruth, but there's only the initial present in the text. If you're looking for Ashley COOPER, I would strongly recommend that you look in the area of Charleston (Charleston, Colleton, Dorchester, Berkeley Co./Dist.) for that name. Two large rivers that meet at the Atlantic to form the peninsula for Charleston, SC, are named the Ashley and the COOPER Rivers for Lord Proprietors of the Colony of Carolina. The names followed through families and, as you know, all those families back then intermarried over and over again! There have been several men named Ashley COOPER, just like good old Ashley WILKES in Margaret Mitchell's GWTW. (I tell the middle schoolers that Ashley was a man's name originally, and they have fits!). I have been told that my COOPER line in Spartanburg Dist., SC, somehow ties into this COOPER of the Lord Proprietor that the COOPER River is named. Haven't found that to be true yet! 3. In the 1860 Census of Pickens Co., SC, I found the following COOPERS listed: <!--StartFragment-->155a 2 COOPER Baily 21 Pickens SC pg0154b.txt 124b 7 COOPER David 31 Pickens SC pg0120b.txt 124b 3 COOPER David A. 8 Pickens SC pg0120b.txt 124b 9 COOPER David A. 11 Pickens SC pg0120b.txt 124b 12 COOPER Delilah A. 5 Pickens SC pg0120b.txt 124b 8 COOPER Elizabeth 31 Pickens SC pg0120b.txt 124b 1 COOPER Elmira 12 Pickens SC pg0120b.txt 124b 21 COOPER Hannah 42 Pickens SC pg0120b.txt 16a 19 COOPER Isabela M. 22 So Ca pg0009b.txt 16a 22 COOPER Isabella A. 4/12 So Ca pg0009b.txt 164a 40 COOPER james 14 Pickens SC pg0163a.txt 164a 38 COOPER Leander 23 Pickens SC pg0163a.txt 130a 24 COOPER Mandy E. 21 Pickens SC pg0129a.txt 154b 40 COOPER Mary 50 Pickens SC pg0154b.txt 124b 11 COOPER Mary L. 7 Pickens SC pg0120b.txt 124b 5 COOPER Mary S. 4 Pickens SC pg0120b.txt 164a 39 COOPER Matilda 45 Pickens SC pg0163a.txt 124b 20 COOPER Nancy 45 Pickens SC pg0120b.txt 124a 39 COOPER Nancy 39 Pickens SC pg0120b.txt 124b 13 COOPER Nancy E. 1 Pickens SC pg0120b.txt 124b 2 COOPER Rebecca A. 10 Pickens SC pg0120b.txt 155a 1 COOPER Rhahab 30 Pickens SC pg0154b.txt 16a 21 COOPER Samuel H. 2 So Ca pg0009b.txt 124b 10 COOPER Sarah J. 9 Pickens SC pg0120b.txt 124b 4 COOPER Stephen E. 6 Pickens SC pg0120b.txt 16a 20 COOPER Thos H. 4 So Ca pg0009b.txt 124a 38 COOPER Warren 39 Pickens SC pg0120b.txt 124a 40 COOPER Washington P. 14 Pickens SC pg0120b.txt 16a 18 COOPER Wm A. 36 So Ca pg0009b.txt This is an index list, and I can look at the actual census if anyone thinks they might have a link to any of these folks. 1. [COOPER-L] Thank you

    3. To Conrad Dennis, Thanks very much for your extensive Cooper family tree. There is no doubt that members of this line of Coopers lived in Newfield, Tompkin county, New York but I found no reference to the names found in the 1830 U,S. census. My hope is to locate a Sarah (or Sally) Cooper born about 1802 who married circa 1825 a John Scott. My interest in the 1830 census of Newfield was based on the fact that a John Scott of the proper age, with wife, was living as a neighbor to five different COOPER families. Any one of these families were of the proper age to have been her brothers and/or father. In your personal research have you run across the situation described above? Thanks very much for taking the time to reply to my inquiry and let me know if you can add anything to my search. Don Richmond ritaalice@fcgnetwork.net

    2. Gary Cooper
    3. I can trace my Cooper line back to ca 1700 in VA. I can't seem to connect to any one for sure before that. This would be a Benjamin Cooper, I do believe he was born in this country. His descendants went to Union Co., SC. some stayed in that area, my line went to Giles CO., TN and on to the AR Terr. ca 1819. 2. Gary and Kathleen, Maybe we need to begin pursuing this earlier line of Jonathan and Sarah Hibbs from Buck's Cty PA as well as the children of William Cooper and Thomasine Porter of England. If connections can be made, it would draw literally thousands of Cooper descendant's together. Take Care, Danny Cooper Byrd
