    3. Annie, Haven't found any connections to those names as yet but so far I've only managed to get as far back as the latter half of the 19th C. After that they have mainly scottish connections. One name that is giving me considerable trouble is the marriage of a John Cooper to Catherina KLASHTON. If anybody has ever heard of anybody with this surname (particularly in connection with the name Cooper) I would be extremely grateful to hear about it. 1. [COOPER-L] RE: COOPER River, SC Rice Plantations...
    2. O'Melia
    3. Growing rice by the tidal flow method transformed the coastal Southeast between 1783 and the early nineteenth century. This method was practical only on the lower stretches of a few rivers from the Cape Fear in North Carolina to the St. Johns in north Florida. Later when Spain gave up the rest of Florida rice was grown as far as Cape Canavaral. Rice plantations required a substantial capital investment and a tremendous amount of back-breaking labor. You may want to use your search engines to find which school library would have the data covering NC, SC, GA, and FL for maps and so forth concerning the rice plantations of the day. Today, those plantations which were bought by the rich folks between 1880 and 1920 are now great hunting and fishing spas for the wealthy to partake.
