    3. Vicki: I am responding to the list as I thought others might be interested. In March I had an email from Betty Dunquez as I was looking for a connection in my Cooper line --from Covington Cooper to Leighton Cooper. I needed the father of Covington who could be either Richard or Robert. Still don't have that. However, Betty said that she too had a Patrick Woods married to Rachel Cooper in 1792 in Richmond, Ky. She said that they had several children and Rachel died, Patrick married a Fanney Delaney and moved to Howard CO, Missouri in early 1800's. Rachels father was Francis Cooper and her mother Anne Abbott. Francis Cooper's father was a Benjamin Cooper born about 1700 in Pennsylvania. She said in her email that she had not documented any of this except that Patrick Woods was married to a Rachel Cooper. I try to hang on to anything that might connect somehow and appreciated Betty's giving me that info. 1. [COOPER-L] Tobacconist COOPERs: Kentucky, Ohio, Maryland, New England
    2. Randal W Cooper
    3. Dear Participants in the COOPER Surname Discussion Group, I am searching for more information regarding COOPERs who were tobacconists, cigar-makers, tobacco manufacturers or tobacco growers. Indeed, COOPERs in any tobacco-related occupation would be of interest in my research. My third-great grandfather William COOPER was listed in the 1850 Census of Greenup County, Kentucky as a tobacconist. A John M. COOPER was enumerated in the 1860 Census of Maysville, Mason County, Kentucky as a tobacconist. A Charles COOPER, tobacconist, was included in the 1836/37 edition of the Cincinnati, Ohio City Directory. A Thomas COOPER was described as the owner of a "segar factory" (cigar-making establishment) in Baltimore, Maryland, also in 1836/37. Finally, Judah Paddock COOPER and Jacob COOPER were farmers in Suffield, Hartford County, Connecticut from the early 1820's until their deaths: Jacob COOPER in 1842 and Judah COOPER in 1862. The Suffield area of the Connecticut River Valley was such a major tobacco-growing region that very few Suffield farmers were NOT growing tobacco. Therefore, it is highly probable that Jacob COOPER and Judah Paddock COOPER were tobacco-growers. The first cigar-making factory in the United States was located at Suffield, Connecticut, beginning its operations in 1810. Thank you for any comments or information! I am earnestly trying to learn more about the COOPERs mentioned in this post. Thanks! Randal W. Cooper in Ohio

    2. Hi John My gr grandmother was a Cooper - Sarah or Sally born ca 1802 - where I have no idea. She married my gr grandfather John Scott and have located some of their children (thru censuses and such). Cannot find her thought she might have named some of her children after her parents but haven't had any luck with that either. Was told by a distant cousin that they had 13 children but so far have only located 10 and they were all born in NY (according to the Census). The children's names were Jane, Charles, George, Squire, Magee, Sarah Elizabeth, Evelucinda, Robert, Zaida, and Harrison. Before 1860 they moved to MI from NY where the children were born but cannot even get a death certificate on John or Sarah. Would appreciate any Cooper info you have. Thank you so much. 3. Hello: Thanks for writing. Sorry about taking so long to get back to you. I really don't know if any of my Cooper's went to Clay Co. or not. I have been told that some of them went to Arkansas, Oklahoma and maybe Missouri. I just thought I might make a contact. I come from Cooper's that moved from N.C. to Wayne Co., Tn. and some into Lauderdale Co., Alabama. Some then moved out and I have made a few connections in Ok. 3. As far as I know, my Alonzo Cooper was never in Oklahoma or Arkansas. He left Maine (Biddeford area I think) with his twin, Lorenzo, and came to the California gold fields by way of ship (about 1855). I have lost track of Lorenzo and rumor has it - Alonzo returned home to tell his mother of the death of her son. (That must be around when he married Mary Adelaid Lowell...) Mary Adelaid Lowell Cooper died, in Auburn CA, about 188? (I have a copy of her probate records but no exact date of death...) In my research, I keep running across another Alonzo Cooper but not the one I am seeking. If you do not you usually are sorry you failed to make note along the way. I hate going over the same ground twice.
