    2. Ellis Cooper
    3. Hi Len I now live in St. Joseph, Mo. My family came to Kans in 1868 from Capon Bridge W. Va.It is believed as handed down that my 4 grt grd father George Cooper is actualy the Georg Kueffer who came from Switzerland with his parents Hans Dubbendorfer Kueffer and Lisbeth Keller and other children. He apparently changed his name to Cooper at time of Oath o fAlegence to America. I have all of my Cooper ancestors back to & including George who married Mary Ruckman. I have all of his children and so on down the line to myself. I am trying to put proof of him coming from Swiss in the record along with the source. If U can help please do so. 1. Re: [COOPER-L] Tidbit Burr-Hamilton Duel -- Chs Cooper
    2. Fellow Cooper Researchers: This is an excerpt on the precipitating event from the PBS summary of the program, which is found here: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/duel/peopleevents/pande17.html I think this is what you want, and it is quite appropriate to election day, although hopefully nothing so drastic will happen this time. <begin excerpt> On July 11, 1804, Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr met on the dueling grounds at Weehawken, New Jersey, to fight the final skirmish of a long-lived political and personal battle. When the duel was over, Hamilton would be mortally wounded, and Burr would be wanted for murder. (some text deleted). It was the New York governor's race of 1804, however, that pushed the two men to violence. In that election, Burr turned his back on the Republicans and ran as an independent. Burr believed that if he won, he would regain power. The prospect of Burr leading New York mortified Hamilton, who despised and mistrusted Burr completely. In early 1804, Hamilton tried to convince New York Federalists not to support Burr. Although Hamilton's campaign was probably not the deciding factor, the Burr campaign failed. Burr was crushed in the general election by Morgan Lewis, the Republican candidate, who was supported by George and DeWitt Clinton, powerful New York Republicans. The battle for New York had been a bruising one, but in the end, a relatively minor slight precipitated the Burr-Hamilton duel. In February, 1804, a New York Republican, Dr. Charles D. Cooper, attended a dinner party at which Alexander Hamilton spoke forcefully and eloquently against Burr. Cooper later wrote a letter to Philip Schuyler in which he made reference to a particularly "despicable opinion" Hamilton expressed about Burr. The letter was published in a New York newspaper the "Albany Register." <end excerpt> More on Cooper's letter is here: http://www-c.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/duel/peopleevents/pande15.html This is all part of a very long and educational site about "The Duel" which begins here: http://www-c.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/duel/peopleevents/index.html Best Regards, Janet Hunter ????>?????>Thomas Cooper, born 1733/5 (maybe Frederick Co VA) who married Sarah Anthony in 1762 in Bedford Co VA.

    3. Vicki and Nancy, Vicki, I'm not able to help you much on how to find out about births in Madison Co, KY. I've been looking for the kids of Covington and or Roberts/ Richards but haven't located much in that direction in KY. Probably too early and I haven't found if they were baptized. Nancy, I have quite a bit on Leighton/ Layton Cooper,he had lots of brothers and sisters, among them Rachel. Leighton was married to a Grizzel/Guzzle Covington and that is probably the source of the name Covington. As after him there was a John Covington Cooper, and my grandfather, George Thomas Covington Cooper It stopped there. I believe Grizzel's father was William Covington of Culpeper Co, VA, and have some documentation to that. Will hang on to your info aned if I run across anything will let you know. Pat Cooper Boden

    3. Pat and Vicki, Would you mind including me in your Rachel et al loop, too, please. Especially since she was in KY. I have been trying to identify the connection between Benjamin and the David<Marcome line from whom my husband's John Cotten now appears to be descended. John C. and many of his sons,Cader,Abner,Marcum,...were in KY by early 1800s. I had gotten Betty's line back in the spring, too, and we were working on sorting these guys out. I feel like Benjamin might possibly be a key to a link between what I call "my two Cader lines". The first one was the one in Bertie Co.,NC. In his family information there is a receipt for an Edward Manning. Then I found where an Edward Mannning, that would seem to be the same one, was a bondsman for the marriage of *a* Benjamin in MD that would be about the right time. (My grandmother was a Manning, too.) Do you think Covington was named for a forbear's surname? Now,to further mix things up, data that was supplied to me by Emma Shepherd,a descendant of Abner, fromIL, has John Cotten's son Marcum married to a Patsy Howerton. My paternal greatgrandmother was another MarthaJane"Patsy"Howerton,m.in KnoxCo.,KY in1876. But I have learned from my research on them that there were others that were in Christian Co. too, which is where John Cotten and his son Cader were. There was a Howerton man who married a Mrs. Covington, and a Covington is also mentioned in the "little ledger" of the older Cader's family. (sorry I don't have all the specifics right at hand.)And of course the town of Covington is in TN just below Christian Co. I've seen little snippets of Leighton/Layton before, but could you send me your line with locations too, please? Keep in touch and we will see where these folks came from. Thanks, Nancy Pat Boden wrote: > > Vicki: > > I am responding to the list as I thought others might be interested.
