Peggy, I have Coopers in Southern Ontario. You didn't mention the timeframe. Mine were in the 1800's - Ashley Cooper, Alexander Summers Cooper and Minnie Cooper. Dear Subscribers to the COOPER Surname Mailing List, Quite a while ago, in a book at the Ohio Genealogical Society Library at Mansfield, Ohio, I ran across a COOPER whose given name was either Isaiah, Ezekiel or Elijah, who was said to be member of the Mohegan tribe of Indians in the state of Connecticut. The wife of this Mohegan COOPER (Elijah or Ezekiel or Isaiah) was granted a divorce from him, on grounds of cruelty. If I remember correctly, the year that the divorce occurred was about 1837. Unfortunately, I have misplaced my notes on this, and now the issue of Mohegans and COOPERs has risen in prominence in my research. I am appealing, therefore, to the members of the COOPER Discussion Group for help. Does anyone have information on COOPERs who were Connecticut Mohegans? My ggrandfather William Thomas Cooper(1804-1887) came from Washington County,Maine before settling in Canada.I think a lot of U.S.A. citizens came here for free land grants. Don't seem to be able to go back any further at this time,but there is hope as some of the small villages and towns are now forming geneoligical and historical societies. Len I {believe}I have my 5 ggggg grd father Hans Dubbendorfer Kueffer/Cooper back to the time he was born in Swiss in 1701. Just haven't been ablle to prove it totally. I have alot of my ancestors back to England in 1500's and one to Wales to the yr 1100. It hasn't been easy but fun anyway. I found in my research that one of my lines from England Roger Parks was also an ancestor of my wife, so we are cousins about 13 times removed. Just keep searching and U will get a break one day.
