    1. [COOPER-L] Thomas COOPER: Ownership of his Land after 1677 or 1680
    2. Randal W Cooper
    3. Dear Members of the COOPER Surname Mailing List, First, I would like to thank researcher Charlotte Killian for her response to my query regarding the disposition of Thomas COOPER's land after his death in 1675 at the hand of warring Indians. Second, now that we have established that Thomas COOPER's widow Sarah was allowed to keep the land until her son John COOPER reached the age of twenty-one (called "attaining one's majority"), it is now my object to trace the ownership of this tract of land from 1680 on. John COOPER would have turned twenty-one in 1680, BUT I have found in the LDS Ancestral File that John COOPER died 19 Sep 1677, at Newark, New Jersey. If this information is correct, John COOPER died at the young age of eighteen years. The purpose of this investigation is to see if Jacob COOPER and his son Judah Paddock COOPER lived on Thomas COOPER's land when they moved to Suffield, Connecticut from Westfield, Massachusetts, about 1821. Jacob (Isaac) COOPER and Judah Paddock COOPER were descendants of Thomas COOPER. If we succeed in identifying the various owners of Thomas COOPER's land from 1680 on, we might be able to locate Judah Paddock COOPER's farm in the 1820's. Please note that Judah Paddock COOPER did not buy any land in Suffield, Connecticut, yet he lived and farmed in Suffield from about 1821 until his death in 1862. If I find Judah Paddock COOPER's residence, then I will also have found his son William COOPER's boyhood home, assuming that William COOPER lived in his parents' house. Thank you for any suggestions or information on these topics! Randal W. Cooper

    1. [COOPER-L] Suffield, CT: Thomas COOPER and his Land after 1675
    2. Randal W Cooper
    3. Dear Subscribers to the COOPER Surname Mailing List, Can anyone help me determine what happened to Thomas COOPER's land in Suffield, Hartford County, Connecticut, after Thomas COOPER was killed by Indians in 1675? Thomas COOPER died 5 Oct 1675 at Springfield, Massachusetts. I quote from ~Biography of a Town, Suffield, Connecticut, 1670-1970~, Robert Hayden Alcorn, page 12: "...Lieutenant Thomas COOPER, one of the original five men who had helped John PYNCHON found Suffield, was killed. COOPER had for years been on the friendliest terms with the Indians. He spoke their language. He had confidence in them and was certain that he could dissuade them from overt hostility. He was fifty-eight when he gave his life for the colony." According to Mr. Alcorn, Thomas COOPER had come to New England in 1635 when he was eighteen years old. Thomas COOPER had lived some time at Windsor, Connecticut, knew the whole region well and had the added advantage of friendly relations with the Indians. Thomas COOPER had moved to Springfield, Massachusetts in 1643 and built the first meetinghouse there in 1645. Furthermore, COOPER served for seventeen years as a Selectman in Springfield and had been a deputy to the General Court. Thomas COOPER had proven ability and skill in town affairs. This information is on page 6 of Alcorn's book. If you know where Thomas COOPER's Suffield land was located and who farmed it after 1675, please share such information! Thank you. Randal W. Cooper
