Among the early New England Coopers was David Cooper, b. 1724. Married Sybil MATLACK, 1730-1757, on 2 month3, 1747 in Philadelphia. Sybil died at age 28. Among their children were daughters Martha, who married an ALLISON, and daughter Ann, who married a WOOD. Located in MS Coll 968 of Special Collections in the Library of Haverfor College are 19 boxes housing the ALLISON family papers. In Box 7b #65---COOPER, David 1724-1795. 34 items -Testimonial to him by daughter Martha Cooper ALLISON -Marriage certificate for marriage to Sybil Matlack of Philadelphia; married at Philadelphia 2 mo 3, 1747. #66.---COOPER, Sybil (MATLACK) 1730-1757. - Account of her vision by David COOPER, 1749. -Two poems by David COOPER concerning her vision and her death. #67---COOPER, William 1632-1710 -Copy dated 1762 of certificate of removal of Wm. and Margaret from Coleshill MM, Hertfordshire, to West New Jersy, 1678. Box 10- WHITALL, Joseph #163---2 letters to David COOPER, 11 mo 10, 1790 #165 WOOD, Ann (Cooper) 1756-1783 sister of Martha Cooper ALLISON 2 letters. Although I didn't find it in the online catalog for Haverford College, footnoted in ALBION'S SEED by David Hackett Fischer, there is also a diary of Anne Whitall Cooper, as well as one of David Cooper. Since these records are extremely fragile, they may only be viewed/copied by special permission. But I am pretty certain I did see a note that they had been microfilmed, but, naturally, I can't find it right now. The stats on this David are amazingly similar to those of "our" David 1725-1792 from Spartanburgh, SC. He also is reported to have married in 1747. Daughter Rehab was b. in 1748. Is anybody researching or connected to the David Cooper married to Sybil Matlack? Can you identify the William? Yours Tree-ly Nancy Bray Cooper

Perils, if your research has identified any living male Cooper's from the 4 Cooper-Lines you are researching, it would probably benefit your research as well as others with roots in the areas you are researching, to encourage the living male Cooper's you identify to participate in the Male Cooper DNA Group. The Cooper Surname Reconstruction Project now has 84 participants. Seventy-seven have returned their DNA kits and analysis has been completed on 71. Forty-six different Cooper-lines have been identified in the USA and one in Canada. Many of the Cooper-lines originated in the northeast. H. Hi list, as we speak, I am doing intensive research on the early Coopers of New Jersey. My search has been focused on the Coopers of Eastern NJ, as I am looking for the origin of a Thos Cooper, wf Mary, who migrated to upstate NY circa 1800 or so. There are at least 4 lines of Coopers represented there before 1800, including an Ezekiel from the James of Coopers Point, circa 1750 or so. I am currently exploring the lines of New England Coopers, looking for the origins of the ones who migrated to NJ as land became available. My other New England lines are Balch, Gardner, Bowne,Veren, Conant, Dodge, picked up the Tetor or Dietz in Morris County, NJ, and Cottrell in Monmouth County. The name Conk , Lewis and Grandin appear in NJ for me, and hopefully they will somehow shed some positive light on my elusive Cooper. Nathan, descendent of John and Wilbroe was in Morris County too, if I remember correctly, with out checking my notes. Please post your correspondence so we can all perhaps benefit from it ..hey, you never know!!! Perils of Pauline in NY
Hi Gerre, I have come across Nathan Byrd in my research. My Byrds are traced back to Pittylsvania, Virginia just across the NC/Va border in the 1750 to 1760's timeframe. Danny Cooper Byrd
Curtis, My Coopers were Quakers and arrived Penn's Landing in 1699. They are traced back to Richmond and Low Ellington, Yorkshire England. William Cooper the immigrant was buried in Byberry Meeting Place in 1709. Byberry is still a Quaker meeting place to this day and the cemetary is still there surrounded by a stone wall. They lived just north of Philadelphia in Bucks County before my line migrated to Union County, South Carolina prior to the Revolutionary War. Some remained in SC and others spread out from there to Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas and Ohio. The Ohio bunch remained quakers at least into the 1800's and had some that went to Indiana with descendants going as far west as Washington and Oregon. My line migrated to Marion County, Alabama. My line of Coopers is involved with the Cooper Surname DNA Research program. If you have a male Cooper from your line that is willing to have his DNA matched up against 46 other Cooper lines, you may find a match. It is not very expensive. If interested, contact the administrator, H. Ben Cooper at [email protected] Danny Cooper Byrd
Do you know how long they were in LI, and did they migrate to NJ after that? If so, was it Newark, NJ? My line went from LI to Morris Co. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Charlotte Killian" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, May 28, 2004 8:20 PM Subject: Re: Re: [COOPER] NJ COOPERS > Tom ; Not alot, but this what I have in line; > 1 John & Wibrow > 2 John & Sarah MEW > 3 James & Elizabeth--------- > 4. Charlotte and others: having been down the "emigrated from Holland" path before, just be aware that many ENGLISH immigrants SAILED (embarked) from Holland but were not FROM Holland (Dutch). I know there are some Coopers who were Dutch (Kuyper, Kupfer, Kuper, Kupos, etc.) and anglicized their names, but I've seen this Daniel Cooper before - a collateral line of mine -- and believe his ancestors were English. Curtis, from what I can gather Daniel COOPER b: 1795 is of this same family, b: in Waterford, Camden, NJ and son of Joshua, son of William. I found Daniel in the 1820 OH Census, Clark Co. Can you add to this information? Please tell me about your BYRDS. My husband's were in OK and go back through Johnson Co., AR, Perry Co., TN to Anson Co., NC. His earliest found ancestor, Nathan BYRD, tied in with TERRYs & DICKERSONs (probably out of VA). Were these Coopers Quakers and did a branch of them later migrate to NC, then to OK and IN? My Cooper ancestors eventually ended up in McDonald County, MO. I have a lot of data, would appreciate comparing them. I am most willing to share. I even have Byrd relatives, but probably not the same line as yours..
