    1. COONROD Family Photographs
    2. Shelley Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" a group of four photographs all identified as members of the COONRAD or CONRAD Family of New York. The first photograph is identified as Edith STREETER COONRAD. The photograph was taken at the C. R. Clark Studio in Troy, NY, probably sometime in the 1870's or 1880's with Edith appearing to be in her teens or early 20's at the time. In addition to her name, someone has written "Mother of Mildred COONRAD (GUMMER)" on the back of the photograph. The second photograph is one of Hattie COONRAD (GEOWEY) and was taken at the A. Corden Studio in Troy, NY. This photograph appears to have been taken in the 1860's or 1870's, though a notation on the back states that she was born April 15, 1880. The girl in the photograph appears to be the same one pictured in the first photograph (Edith STREETER COONRAD) so I'm wondering if this photograph might be misidentified. The third photograph is identified as Edith COONRAD. Taken at the A. E. Warnica Studio in Troy, NY, the photograph is dated Dec 1899 and notes that Edith is 40 years old. The photograph appears to have been a gift "Merry Christmas - To Mildred - From Momma" suggesting that Mildred was her daughter. The fourth photograph is one of Mr. J. W. CONRAD of Center Brunswick, NY and was also taken at the A. E. Warnica Studio in Troy, NY. This photograph is dated 6 March 1900, indicates that Mr. CONRAD is 44 years old and is addressed "To Mildred". The name "Papa" is also noted on the back of the photograph leading me to believe that Edith and J. W. CONRAD were married and parents to Mildred as well. Based on limited research I believe that these photographs may all belong to the family of Joseph W. COONROD or COONRADT. Records indicate that Joseph W. COONROD was born in Brunswick, NY to parents Jacob P. & Jane M. COONROD. I find Joseph living with his own family in Brunswick, NY during the 1880 census with records providing the following information: Joseph W. COONRADT, age 24, born in NY, a Milk Peddler, parents born in NY Edith M. COONRADT, wife, age 22, born in NY, Keeping House, parents born in NY Hattie E. COONRADT, dau, age 2 months, born in NY Carrie M. HALL, other, age 9, born in NY, parents born in NY In 1900 Joseph COONRAD is recorded in the census still living in Brunswick, NY: Joseph W. COONRAD, age 43, born Nov 1856, married 22 years, born in NY, parents born in NY, a Blacksmith M. Edith COONRAD, age 41, born June 1858, married 22 years, 2 children/2 living, born in NY, parents born in VT/NY Hattie E. COONRAD, age 20, born Apr 1880, born in NY, a Crayon Artist Mildred COONRAD, age 6, born Aug 1893, born in NY In 1920 Joseph COONRAD is recorded in the census still living in Brunswick, NY: Joseph COONRAD, age 63, born in NY, parents born in NY, an Automobile Worker Edith M. COONRAD, wife, age 60, born in NY, parents born in NY Hattie C. GOWEY, dau, age 39, widow, born in NY, a Milliner J. M. GOWEY, grandson, age 12, born in NY, parents born in NY I'm hoping to locate someone from this family so that these wonderful old photographs can be returned to their care. If you are a member of this family, or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Coonrod, Conrad Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/RkJ.2ACIB/206.1.1 Message Board Post: I have long believed we are of Swiss descent rather than German as some have assumed but have not found the "proof" yet. It is very possible they could have been in Maryland prior to going to Virginia and I suspect some connection to the Woolery Coonrod family which is why I inquired about a DNA project. My research indicates we are descendants of Peter Coonrod, b. bef 1755 who married Catherine Brakefield b. bef 1755 (daughter of Isaac Brakefield, documented from Switzerland). We do not know if Peter Coonrod was born in America or if he came here as a child. We do track them from Augusta Co., VA in 1770; 1773 to Botetourt Co., VA 1775; 1779; 1782; 1784 to Chester County SC 1787; 1790;1793; 1794; 1784; 1800; 1810; 1820; 1821; Jun 29 1827. We know Peter died before 1 Nov 1827 when Catherine is listed as widow of Peter Coonrod in a land deed. There is a cemetery in Chester Co. SC with small side by side headstones marked P.C. and K.C. which we believe to be Peter Coonrod and Catherine Coonrod. We believe our Joseph Coonrod b. abt 1795 Chester Co., SC, to be the son of Peter Coonrod and Catherine Brakefield. (Some have theorized he could be the grandson of Peter but I believe he was a son). He married Hester (aka Hetty) (Maiden name unknown). We know Joseph was in Chester Co., SC in 1800; 1810; 1820; 1827; 1830; 1833; 1840; his last child born 1845 in Chester Co. SC. The family began migrating to Jackson Co. Fl by 1847 but we have found no record that Joseph went to Fl with the family and do not know if he died before, while migrating, after arriving or what may have happen to him. Hester is found in Jackson Co. FL on the 1850 & 1860 Census with all of the known children present with the exception of one married daughter who was still in Chester Co., SC but soon followed with her husband and his family. We do not know when Hester died. The 1870 census is missing for that part of Jackson Co. so we do not know if she died before then or not. She is not found ! in the 1880 Jackson Co., FL Census. There are many male descendants if anyone is interested in starting a DNA project I am sure some of them would be very interested but time is important as advanced age is a factor.

You may want to contact the owner of the letter, Rufus Cox at [email protected] According to the letter, a Josephas Coonrod of Switzerland was the first generation in the US in 1742. I am learning this surname, Conrad, is very common and has many spellings, Coonrod, Coonrad, Conrod, Conrad, Konrad. This Oliver Coonrod was the brother to my grandfather, John Henry Coonrad. I have a papers showing the name spelled three ways on the same document. The family spread out to Fairfield, Licking, and Franklin Counties, OH throught the generations. I'm sure others went out of state too. Good luck, Tina
