In the Detroit Free Press, Thursday, June 27, 2002, under the heading "ASK THE FREE PRESS" appeared the following: "QUESTION: Show Low is that town in Arizona threatened by the giant wildfire. Isn't that a strange name for a town? ANSWER: Not to poker players. The story is that a local rancher won a hand of cards in 1876, after his opponent said, "Show low, and you win." The rancher, Croyden Cooley, drew a two of clubs and won his opponent's ranch and the right to name the town. The main street in town is called Deuce of Clubs Drive."
