Hi, Donna. I really enjoyed your posting! Never heard the Arizona part of the story...I heard that 3 brothers went to TX, but came back as far as LA and settled. I am one of the LA line of Cooleys. My hometown is DeRidder, just about 30 miles north of DeQuincy. DiAnne

MS Cooleys, I "bumped" into sme of our LA Cooley cousins, I believe, in the course of my "DAY JOB" so to speak, and spoke at length with Mr. Cooley from DeQuincy, LA. He told me the story he had heard was that five Cooley brothers had headed for Arizona.....they got there, one died there, with issue, but the others headed back, presumably to MS. Two stopped along the way and made their permanent homes........in LA, one near DeQuincy and one in another town I cant quite remember at the moment as this info I jotted down is at the office. He mentioned some names we are all familiar with, Ira, William etc......and did say that obviously at least one Cooley made it back to Wayne County....could this be part of the Cooley group that recently had a reunion in LA?..Needlless to say, I'd like to wait for his permission before I introduce Mr Cooley's name over the net.......I don't know that he even has an interest in genealogy but he could go way back with his direct line..and that is the first time I've ever heard about the 5 Cooleys going to Arizona and coming back. Anyone have anything on this? I am trying to locate any info on Joseph aka Josiah Cooley, born 1838 and died 4 - 1 - 1897 in Summit,Mi.as stated in a book titled Michigan Civil War Vets. I found him in the 1860 census of Calhoun Co.Mi. The 1880 census for Gratiot Co. MI states his parents were born in NY. He married Louisa Cooley in Calhoun Co. MI in 1866. I have a list of their children. What I am seeking is his parents names and any siblings. Thank you Phyllis
Does anyone have any information on a McCarver that left Missouri about 1880 and when he got to Clifton, Wayne County, Tennessee, he had started using the name of Cooley? This was because after a gunfight the law was going to hang his brother and he thought he would be next, if caught. Does anyone know of the brother that was hung around 1880. None of these are in my database. This sure is strange. I've got three of the surnames you mention but in two separate lines of my family. The Cooley name is on my Mom's line while Turner and Hardy are on my Dad's line. Dad's line joins with Turner in 1864 when Spencer Hardy (my ggf) married Sarah Angeline Turner in Iowa. My mother's maternal line is Cooley and goes through Alice Nettie Cooley, James Alvin Cooley, Miller Wisdom Cooley, James Alvin Cooley, Daniel Cooley, John Cooley, Lambert Cooley to William Cooley b. in 1694. Does any of this sound familiar?
