    3. Greetings Gary, I have a WOODWARD line out of Leicestershire and Lincolnshire England around 1847 then their daug. married a COOLY COOLEY line around 1870ish in Indiana USA. this WOODWARD line has ADAMS and HARDY lines of England then there seems to be these names that link in USA so far.. HIBBERT, COOLY COOLEY, LIMPUS, TOBEY, PECK, and a ROW line that I finding that could link back to this same area of England.. TURNER, CROSBY, McDONALD just a few that come to mind right off. I know I missed some others.. but would welcome any discussion on any of this as possible links or clue for our lines. BTW Where are you located? Thanking in advance, Good Luck may any help in my query be returned ten fold.. Leicestershire England Query Forum http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/England/Leicestershire?read=714 Family from Leicester Posted by Gary MacMullen <Biddmacmullen@aol.com> on Sun, 09 Jul 2000 Surname: Briggs, Cooley or Coolie, Foxon, Woodcock I am looking for information about my great grandparents from Leicester England and any earlier history as well. William Briggs and his second wife Edith would have moved to the USA around 1900-1910. His first wife was Fanny Coolie (sp?) They had one son Herbert. William owned a fish market as I recall from my grandfather. My grandmother was also born in Leicester and her parents were William Foxon and Julia Woodcock. I believe they stayed in Leicester. My grandmother would have been born in 1900 so that should provide a frame of reference. thank you for any help that anyone can provide.

Did you know that Wayne County is going to put out a book, History of Wayne County, MS? Our Cooleys are supposed to be in it. I can't wait to get a copy. I have wandered the same about the spelling. Also, does this will give the maiden name of his wife? I hope so, for if his name is John C. and he had a son named Samuel, I will know that he is my ancestor. Also, please furnish the County in which Darlington, SC. is located (if info is available). Bernice (Couey) Anderson

    2. Hello, I went back and reread your e-mail. Evidently we are from the same line -- just spell our names differently. Did you know that the original family came from France, to Ireland, then to South Carolina? Earl Couey has much information on this and you can check it out on the Internet. Jane, Joseph etc. that you listed are the names of my ancestors, according to my research, however the name was spelled differently. Bernice (Couey) Anderson

    1. Re: [Cooley] Cooley name variations?
    2. Hello, Yes, I have seen the name COOLEY spelled many ways. My maiden name was COUEY and in doing research, I have found many variations of the name, i.e., Coue, Cowie, Cooie, Cooey, Cooley, Covey, Coney, Coo Wee, etc.. I was born and reared in Floyd County, Ga., eldest daughter of Oscar Bernard Couey, who was the son of Sam Couey, son of Samuel Couey, son of Allen G. Couey, son of Samuel Couey who was the son of John C. Couey. The names that you quoted are very prevalent in my research and indications are that the person making up the handwritten ship rosters misspelled many names. Perhaps your names should have been COOEY for a Joseph Cooey came over on the Ship Brittanica which sailed from Ireland. The name in South Carolina was spelled Couey. Eventually as the family spread to various parts of the United States, the name was spelled in many ways. In fact, when I was born in 1927, the doctor that delivered me entered my name as CONEY instead of Couey and I did not find this out until a few years ago when I needed a copy of my Birth Certificate and found the incorrect spelling. There I had been a CONEY all of those years and was not aware of it! The handwritten name can be deceiving for it DOES look very much like CONEY, COVEY etc. Incidentally, there are Cooleys in Floyd County (around the Cave Spring, Georgia area) and they know that their ancestors were originally members of the Couey family that came to that area from South Carolina. (Descendants of Joseph Couey.) Bernice (COUEY) Anderson, Nevada
