    3. Laura - I found a connection. The PA. reference threw me. I am trying to finalize descendant entries to my book. I assume you descend from David, correct? David was the son of Clark Cooley II and his second wife Fanny Landon. You can pick up some info at my website page: http://www.a-c-o-m.com/genealogy6.htm Look at Bill R's Ahnentafel Report to find ancestors of Clark Cooley II. I have some descendants of David. I will include any info you send and acknowledge it from you in my book if you care to furnish your lines info. It will be about the ancestors and descendants of Clark Cooley II and Candace Holcombe. I hope to have it ready by early 2003. Any help would be appreciated. 1. Re: [Cooley] Thomas Todd Cooley of Tasmania
    2. Hi! I probably can't help you with your research, as I've only traced my Cooleys back to the 1500s in America, but I taught school in Australia years ago - always wondered if there were any Cooleys Down Under. (Of course, wouldn't you know, I wasn't into genealogy 'way back then, so I didn't do any research!) I remember visiting Tasmania - or at least a portion of it. Port Arthur, of course, although the prison or jail (gaol?) facility in Richmond actually gave me more of a feel of the horrors of prison life at the time. The structures at Port Arthur were just so far gone; little more than footprints of so many of the buldings. I traveled with another teacher, and one of the highlights of the trip was the cylinder-shaped casino in Hobart (which, at the time was the only place you could gamble in Australia). We couldn't get in because he wasn't wearing a tie. Went back to the little motel; the old woman who owned the place loaned us one of her husband's. It was one of those wide 1960s tie-died things - but it got us in! We didn't venture into northwest Tassie. At the time it wasn't considered safe. Wish I had gone now, of course. So were your Cooleys prisoners or guards or settlers? Sheryl Cooley

    1. [Cooley] Capt. Luke COOLEY
    2. Hello List - I hope you can help me with this question. Does anyone know what Luke COOLEY's military service was? He's always referred to as "Capt." Luke Cooley, but I can't find any record of his service. Today, in the DAR Library (now open on Saturdays!) I found him in the Public Records of the Colony of Connecticut, on 10 June 1768 he was one of the "Representatives or Deputies of the Freemen of the several towns .... Capt. Luke Cooley, for Somers. ..." The Library also has several books listing CT men who served in the French and Indian War and in colonial wars. I couldn't find him in either, but just looked quickly because I was running out time and energy. Both books are indexed, and some COOLEYs are listed, but not Luke. Maybe he served in MA? Thanks for any help. -- Mary Russell
