    1. [Cooley] SAMUEL COOLEY 1889
    2. Sandy McDougall
    3. On 10 March 1889 the above Samuel COOLEY of Livingston, Montana, submitted information that was incorporated into a book "The COOLEY Genealogy". I have no idea who the author was as all I have in my possession is one page. (page number 954, so I am impressed with the size of this tome!). As follows: "COOLEY, of Irish extraction, lost at sea for 7 years; wrote a book of his life which was not published. He settled in Chenango Co., N.Y., and had 8 sons, one of whom was Charles, who had Loren, who had Gertrude, Hall and Samuel. Other sons were Reuben of Whatcheer, Iowa; Samuel of Bowling Green, Ohio; James, Charles, and Dell of Vincennes, Ind.; daughters Susan and Ellen. Sent from Samuel Cooley, Livingston, Mont., Mar.10 1889." The family above appears to be the one I am searching as I have found connecting evidence to these names. I find Reuben and Lorin (sp) on the 1870 What Cheer, Keokuk Co., Iowa Census: Lorin age 29 born in New York, wife (looks like)- Cornelia Gertrude age 3 born Ohio Samuel age 2 born Ohio living next door: Rubart (on other rec's Reuben) age 32 born New York, wife Margaret Charles age 9 born Iowa Prentis age 7 born Iowa (looks like)- Charity age 5 born Iowa Mary age 3 born Iowa Lizzie age 1 born Iowa Both of these brothers were listed as Blacksmiths. In the Probate Record of the widow of James COOLEY, Mary Jane (LITTLE) COOLEY lists his parents as Charles and Mahailey COOLEY and his siblings as: brothers...." Rubin Cooley, Samuel Cooley, Louel Cooley sisters....." Susin Underwood, Della Hicks, Ella Cooley. New York and Ohio were where the children were born. Charles and Mahailey (according to James) died 1855 and 1851 respectively and I find the young James, Susan and Samuel all living with other families in the 1850 and 60 Ohio Census. So, it appears that Charles and Mahailey had some of the children in New York, and others in Ohio. Sandusky Co. is the place of record of the birth of James and that is the same County I find the young children living with the other families. It is possible/probable that both parents died in that County. I am looking for EITHER descendants or ancestry here. I am mightily interested in the family of the Samuel COOLEY who submitted the information from Livingston, Mont. Perhaps his descendants have knowledge of the "unpublished" book. Personally, I am very interested in how one is lost at sea for seven years!!!!! Thanks for your time, Sandy (in Alaska) sandy@mosquitonet.com

    1. Re: [Cooley] Eldad COOLEY Licking Co., Ohio - Jackson Co., Iowa
    2. Paul, My Cooley line ended up in OR, where I am from. They are from WI and MI as far as we've been told and have been able to find. If you could send me some other names, (my family named everyone after other family members) we may be able to find a connection somewhere. The most common Cooley given names in my line are Byronand Warren. My great grandfather from Suring, WI was Ralph Herbert Cooley born 18 Dec 1890. His father's name was Warren Cooley and His mother was Lusira Jane Powers. They moved to OR sometime after 1893 when their youngest son Ellis was born. Email me and let me know if anything sounds familiar. -Paige "Paul Dickey, Jr." wrote: > I'm trying to find information on the death/burial dates and locations of > Eldad and Martha (HARRIS) COOLEY.
