I think it says "shaper." The letter p in Thompson looks like the letter in the occupation. But what did he shape? Wood (carpentry of some sort)? Fabric (clothing)? The possibilities are endless. Unfortunately, I can't find shaper on lists of old occupations, perhaps because it's so general. Diane
