She immigrated from Sweden in the early 1920's and lived in Christine, North Dakota until her death in 1953. She lived with her daughter Anna L. Hanson (Melin) my great aunt and passed away in Moorhead Minnesota in 1978. My mother was born to Hulda's son Nils Gustaf Melin and her mother was Signe Otilia Ostberg in January 1924. My mother also had an older brother named Leonard Melin. Any info about my grandmother Signe Melin/Carlson/Schwarm??? would be greatly appreciated. She lived in Illinois. Dakota to marry NILS(NELS) GUSTAF ERIK MELIN. I can find no evidence that the marriage occured except that her alledged maiden name was listed on my birth certificate as MALINE. It is also known that she went to Chicago (where I was born in 1933) - my father being ERNEST ROSCOE SCHWARM of Fayette County, Illinois. She may have married a fellow with the surname of CARLSON, as was listed as her previous name on the marriage certificate to my father Ernest. I just learned that SIGNE left a child in foster care in Sweden, who turns out to be my half-sister, and who is alive and well at age 84. We know about Signe's history between 1933 (when she married Eugene SCHWARM) until her death, but not about her whereabouts and possible marriages/children between 1922 (when she arrived in US) and 1933. Signe was born ÖSTBERG (American spelling OSTBERG), and emigrated from Sweden to US in 1922. She possibly left for USA with Nils Gustaf (or Fritz) MELIN (possible US spelling MALINE or similar). According to the Ellis Island ship records, Signe's destination was the town CHRISTINE, ND., where Nils Gustaf's (Fritz's) mother, Hulda MELIN, lived. Nils Gustaf's (Fritz's) listed his nearest relative in Sweden according to the ship records as his aunt, Karin MELIN, who lived at Folkungagatan 18 B in STOCKHOLM. The above findings have made me wonder whether Signe first settled with Nils Gustaf or Fritz MELIN/MALINE, and even married him, or if she went on from North Dakota to for instance Illinois (which some people have guessed, and which is the reason to why I joined this list) and from there to Oregon, where she finally met with her husband-to-be Eugene. I am extremely grateful for every kind of information that can shed some light on Signe's life during this period.
