Joseph, We had a speaker from NARA-Great Lakes at the South Suburban Genealogical & Historical Society's meeting earlier this month who spoke on military records. I believe he said that only Army and Army Air Force records were destroyed in the 1973 fire. Naval records from WWII are available. He also had a pamphlet available that says that Navy, Marine and Coast Guard records were not affected by the fire in St. Louis in 1973. Check the NARA website for the proper form(s) that you need to fill out. As a next-of-kin, you should have no problems obtaining your father's naval service records. This is a website referred to in the pamphlet about WWII service records: http://archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/get-service-records.ht ml . I hope this helps you. My Dad was in the Navy, and he is now 90 and living with Parkinson's in Houston. May I obtain his records as next of kin? Joseph Martin Romeoville, Illinois
