Laura I looked for your Peter Thompson on the Ellis Island site and had no luck pulling up his information. You probably already tried that. It might be the site does not have current (1930's) information. I then plugged into Google Ellis Island Infirmary and noticed that it closed in 1930. If this is correct then you will need to find where immigrants who were ill would have been taken after that closure. If your Peter applied for his Passport in Chicago, you should get a copy of his passport. That way you will know the exact spelling of his name. This will be crucial in finding his records. Did he use an America spelling or did he use the Norwegian spelling of his name. Also I believe you need to resend your query to the Ellis Island Site. Your original letter might just have gotten lost or filed into a wrong file. One question you need to be asking is where the indigent immigrants would have been buried in the late 1930's and very early 1940's. Along with posting your query on a New York site, see if there is an Ellis Island RootsWeb site and post the query on that site. Pat
