    3. Thanks, Bobbi.   I'm still laughing.  I, too, had a Pelagia in the family, and she first went by Pearl and then later by Bessie.   Ruth   ________________________________ From: Raven Fan <tm5173@comcast.net> To: Ruth Susmarski <rususmar@yahoo.com>; Cook County <COOK-CO-IL@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, May 1, 2012 9:42 AM Subject: Re: [COOK-CO-IL] Ukrainian given names Found this site by Googling.  Your names are there. http://www.behindthename.com/names/usage/ukrainian That said, an individual could call themselves anything they wanted to.  My Polish ancestor baptised Pelagia went by Polly and then Pauline in America. Anyone out there have knowledge of Ukrainian given names that can help with the following? Google just isn't doing it... Could HRYHORIJ translate to GEORGE? Could PARASKEVIA translate to PAULINE? Also, is HRYC a short form of HRYHORIJ? Really struggling with my paternal grandmother's family from the far SE (Sub-Carpathia) region of Poland. Because of a long history of border changes, this area has a very strong Ukrainian influence. Thanks, Ruth
