This is not Cook County related, exactly, although many members of this family branch did settle in Chicago. Anyone out there have knowledge of Ukrainian given names that can help with the following? Google just isn't doing it... Could HRYHORIJ translate to GEORGE? Could PARASKEVIA translate to PAULINE? Also, is HRYC a short form of HRYHORIJ? Really struggling with my paternal grandmother's family from the far SE (Sub-Carpathia) region of Poland. Because of a long history of border changes, this area has a very strong Ukrainian influence. Thanks, Ruth
Found this site by Googling. Your names are there. http://www.behindthename.com/names/usage/ukrainian That said, an individual could call themselves anything they wanted to. My Polish ancestor baptised Pelagia went by Polly and then Pauline in America. HRYC sure looks to me like it would get transliterated to Horace, but that is just a guess from eyeballing the name. There is a very low traffic Ukraine list you could try posting at: http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/UKR/UKR-GENSEARCH.html Also, the Poland Roots Mailing list has name experts sometimes answering questions and if your family was from within Poland at some point (I am not sure from your post), you might get some very interesting responses there. It is a very friendly list: http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/POL/POLAND-ROOTS.html
