To Lisa and others who were part of this earlier discussion, Today I received a letter from the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis regarding my March 21 request for the World War II U.S. Navy Records for my Dad. He is now 90 years old and suffers with Parkinson's disease. The letter stated that their personnel located my Dad's file. It continued "Because the veteran was completely discharged from the military more than 62 years ago, the Official Military Personnel File is now considered an 'archival' record." Thus, it is now a public record. I can request photocopies of his file for ONLY $60. Interestingly, the return reply envelope is addressed to NARA in St. Louis, which means the files have been moved. I have already found 28 U.S. World War II Navy Muster Rolls (1938-1949) for him on Ancestry. I hope that his file will have some additional records with many more details for my $60. Wish me luck. My check is in the mail. Hi Joseph, That's great. Thanks for letting us know how this turned out. I didn't know about the 62 years. I hope there is a lot of information there for you. I don't think the Navy Records were involved in the fire. My grandfather had some health issues so he never served in the military, but he worked as a civilian electrician on the air base in Roswell, New Mexico. I would like to see if there are any records for him.
