Looking for Julius L. Marten, age about 60, at 21 Cleveland Avenue in the 1900 Federal census of Cook County. Is there a way to go to the census data by address rather than by surname? Suggestions appreciated. Bob Schimmel schimmel <at> northlink.com
Is there an index by street ... no. But most any censuses can be "browsed" and you can go to the location in that manner. You will have to do a little preparatory work ... 1. Convert any pre-1909 address to post-1909 at http://www.rootsweb.com/~itappcnc/pipcnstreets.htm so that you can check on current day maps ( www.mapquest.com ) and get an approximate location for the house. 2. Determine the Ward and Enumeration District for the Census Year at http://www.alookatcook.com/ 3. Go to the Ward in the desired Census in a "browse" mode 4. Search for the general area of the pages for the ED of interest. I generally jump through the census pages in 20, 50 or 100 page jumps and can get to the ED fairly quickly. Then going by the page numbers jump back to the first page of the ED and then start going from page to page looking for the street/address of interest.
