I actually don't remember not having hot water, but I was born just after WWII ended and my dad returned from duty to the cities only to find there was no place for the three of us to live! So, he and my mom found what used to be a shoemaker's shop in Berwyn - it had cold water only. My dad would constantly tell me how mom used to wash my poopie diapers in cold water. I do remember the venetian blinds and wallpaper they put up, and the rear steps out of our apartment. I was just short of my 4th birthday when we moved across the street to an apartment on the third floor with hot/cold running water! Mom swears the cold water later on caused arthritis in her hands! I also remember the street cars on Ridgeland on 22nd street. But, they were gone around 1950-51. Karen
