ok, HAPPY NEW YEAR today, I got some new info from my cousin Theresa WEIN & Lester BASSETT married at a Catholic Church 21 April 1906 in Chicago they lived near the stockyards now I need to figure out where the stockyards would be today and where the nearest Catholic Churches were if anyone give me an idea the stockyard area please e-mail me I need an address or something I can look up on a map thanks & take care, Debbie
researchers, I plan to use the Roman Catholic Churches 1850-1990 resource fiche #6111007 I think this is the resource I used before it is excellant once I know where the stockyard area is I can look for the churches in about 1910 and I'll have a better idea of the churches in their area take care, Debbie
The original Union Stockyards were bounded by 39th St. (Pershing), Halsted St., 47th St. and Ashland Ave. The church you are probably looking for is St. Gabriel (St. Gabes) at 45th and Lowe or Wallace depending on whether you want the church or the rectory. However, it could be St. John the Baptist which was on 50th Pl. but is now closed; or St. John of God at 52nd and Throop which is also closed. The only parish I can think of north of 39th St., is Nativity of Our Lord at 37th and Union. >From the names you are searching I would say you may want to seek out Irish churches. For example St John of God I believe was a Polish Church, St Augustine near 51st and Wood (I think) was a German church. People were clannish then and tried ti stick together. -----Original Message----- From: cook-co-il-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:cook-co-il-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of KayB Sent: Monday, January 01, 2007 5:45 PM To: alley77532@peoplepc.com; cook-co-il@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [COOK-CO-IL] looking for the right Catholic Church The original Union Stockyards were bounded by 39th St. (Pershing), Halsted St., 47th St. and Ashland Ave. The church you are probably looking for is St. Gabriel (St. Gabes) at 45th and Lowe or Wallace depending on whether you want the church or the rectory.
