To Bonnie: 1998-04-04 Chicago Tribune (IL) LINUS OWEN SMITH Edition: Chicago Tribune Linus Owen Smith, 87, who used a lifetime of business skills in volunteer service after his retirement, died Thursdayin West Palm Beach, Fla., under the care of the Hospice of Palm Beach County. He had recently suffered a severe stroke, said his wife, Nancy Smith. Mr. Smith, who had lived in Glencoe and Glenview, was vacationing in Atlantis, Fla., when he was stricken. Born in Chicago, Mr. Smith graduated from New Trier High School in Winnetka and Carleton College in Northfield, Minn. He was a fighter pilot during World War II. Mr. Smith was the owner and president of T.F. Washburn Co. in Chicago, a manufacturer and distributor of chemical ingredients used in the manufacture of paint. The company had been started by his father, Calude Smith. Later, after Washburn was sold, Mr. Smith worked for the Sanford Corp. in Chicago in the sales and marketing department. He retired in 1969 and turned his energies to the Executive Service Corps of Chicago, a volunteer, nonprofit organization that matches retired executives with nonprofit companies so the firms can benefit from the knowledge and advice of the retirees. In addition to his wife, Mr. Smith is survived by two daughters, Sharon Farny and Barbara Carlson; a son, Dwight; a stepdaughter, Jane Lamberson; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
