Hi Elaine, I checked the Illinois Statewide Death Index, Pre-1916 and found a couple that might be possibilities for George T. (Jr.) mother. There was a Mary SHIELDS who died 1893-05-10 in Chicago at the age of 35.  Certificate # 00017807 in Cook County. There us also a long shot of Elizabeth SHIELDS who died 1895-11-27 in Chicago at the age of 28.  Certificate # 00018256 in Cook County. You might check to see if anyone could find obituaries on either one of them to see if they might tell you more information. Hope these might be of help to you.
