I have been to this site before and I'm back.... Here is my dilemma and it is the only brick wall left in my research of our Shields family. George T. Shields (Sr) was born in Lockport, Will County, 1861 and died June 21, 1891, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. His death record says he is married but does not give the name of his wife. He was living at 172 W. Vanburen, Chicago when he died. Chicago directory records I have found have him living in Chicago in 1888, 1890, 1891. In Lockport, Will County, where he was born and where the rest of his family lived, there is no record of a marriage for him so I can only assume he married in Chicago ca 1888-1890. I need some guidance on if/how/where to pursue a marriage record for him in Cook Co. He is not the George Shields who married Mary Harvey in Will County. His son George T. Shields (Jr) was born Jan 9, 1891, in Chicago (a few months before his father died). His 1943 death record does not give the name of his mother. His marriage record does not give the name of his mother. His WWI Draft Registration Record does not give the name of his mother. In 1900 census, George (Jr) is living with the family of his father in Lockport and was brought up by them. Where is his mother? Did she die? Did she abandon him? So, I also need some guidance on if/how/where I should pursue a birth record for him. Our ultimate goal -- to find the wife of George T. Shields (Sr), therefore, mother of George T. Shields (Jr). Thank you. Elaine Sharp Sacramento CA
I would be thinking infectious disease by now, wondering if there were multiple deaths in the family. But meantime try looking for a marriage for a Shield woman something might pop. Did George the son marry? Can you find a report on that? Were there any more children?
