Fred, Do you have access to Heritage Quest thru your local library? If you do, you can often see images. It's free online. I haven't always found what I'm looking for, but at least 50%. Their images aren't as spruced up as Ancestry's are beginning to be, but if you don't have access to Ancestry, it's the next best thing. Ancestry's image would probably clear up the Higgs-Nicks problem. I have access to Ancestry. Would you like me to look him up for you and send the image to you off-list? Tell me the exact name you're looking for--was the name you want Higgs or Nicks? And the age you think he was in 1920. The place in Chicago is clear from what Kate sent you. I've found some people whose ages are way off from census to census. As are places of birth, etc. And this is for census data as recent as what you're looking at. I had one gg uncle who "ran away from home" between the 1880 census and 1891, when we have a letter he wrote from NM. In the 1900 - 1930 He always said he was b. in LA (state) and his father in France. I have a Bible and many other records, including census records, showing he was b. in IL and his father in NY. And his birth year varied greatly in the census in NM, but was around the year of a dead half-brother born 10 years before he was. These discrepancies went on until the 1930 census. His descdeandant and I have yet to figure out why. All that is why census data is secondary data, not primary data. Use it to hunt down primary data, like the cemetery records. I've seen a few errors there, but many many fewer.
