I've "rescued" an old photograph of Henry A. ROSS which was taken at the Copelin Studio in Chicago, Illinois. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1880's with Henry appearing to be in his 20's at the time it was taken. I am hoping to locate someone from Henry's family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to the care of his family. If you are a member of this family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
Felicia, As the immediate Past President of the Chicago Genealogical Society and a current Director of the same, I can tell you that the Chicago Genealogist is not currently available in an electronic or digitized form. The Chicago Genealogical Society has an on-going project to index the Chicago Genealogist from the first issue to the latest issue. However, since this indexing project is dependent on volunteers to do the indexing in the first place and then for other volunteers to proof-read what has been indexed, the exact date as to when the indexing project will be finished is unknown at this time. The idea of digitizing the Chicago Genealogist was recently proposed to the Board of Management of the Chicago Genealogical Society. More information is needed on the idea of digitizing the Chicago Genealogist before the Board of Management can make a decision on whether or not to proceed with such a project. You will probably have to hold on to your paper copies of the Chicago Genealogist for the near future and face the possibility that you might be asked to appear on the "Hoarders" program. Thanks Thomas. Perhaps digitizing it and selling the CDs might be a money maker for CGS? Heritage Quest digitized their 1985-1999 magazines, and this CD sells for about $24. I found Ancestry magazines online with free access on Google.com. I'm still looking for "The Irish At Home and Abroad" digitized versions, couldn't find it. In the meantime I guess I'll get my hair done in preparation for my reality show debut and keep my copies! Everyone should try to attend at least one of Craig's presentations. He is HILARIOUS! I happened to hear a talk he gave once about outhouses and what kind of stuff people threw in there (dishes, bottles, toys, etc.) You can learn alot about a family by looking through their garbage. Critique of Chicago Family Research Sites and Sources On Sunday, December 4, 2011 the Genealogical Forum of Elmhurst will host a presentation by Craig Pfannkuche. The meeting will be held at 3:00 p.m. in the Community Bank of Elmhurst, 300 W Butterfield Rd, Elmhurst (intersection of Spring Road. There is a traffic light and a Shell station on the NE corner). Guests are welcome. For information, call 708/531-0449. www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ilgfe/ The program will discuss places to investigate when researching your Chicago area ancestors. The Genealogical Forum of Elmhurst is a family history club serving people in the western suburbs of Chicago. The club seeks to educate and stimulate, to share and help, and to promote genealogy in a non-critical way. General meetings of the organization are held on five Sunday afternoons each year. Please join us for this informative lecture. Sharon Zarembka, Secretary The Genealogical Forum of Elmhurst
Recently Megan Smolenyak posted this. Social Security Administration extends FOIA restriction to 100 years<http://megansmolenyak.posterous.com/social-security-administration-extends-foia-r> Unfortunately, it’s now official. I have been ordering Social Security applications for several decades, and have found them especially valuable over the last decade for assisting with my Army cases. A few years ago, I noticed that they were starting to block out names of parents on the applications – which is very unfortunate since that’s the primary reason for ordering them. Still, the restriction seemed to pertain to applications for those born from 1940 or so on, and the explanation was that their parents could still be alive. So though I wasn’t keen on it, I could understand the logic. But recently – without any announcement – the Administration extended the restriction to 100 years – that is, 100 years from the birth of the applicant, so you can now only obtain this record in an unaltered state for those born prior to 1912. This letter is in response to one I wrote where I explained how it would negatively impact the ability to locate soldiers’ family members and that the parents whose privacy was suddenly being protected would have to be somewhere on the order of 120 to 150 years old, if alive. I can apparently receive the full application if I can prove that the parents are deceased, but 1) that’s a catch-22 since that’s exactly why I usually ordered the document in the first place, and 2) many of my cases are for foreign-born soldiers who immigrated to the U.S. so I would have to seek death certificates from places ranging from Finland to the Philippines. For similar reasons, this perplexingly long restriction will obviously also affect the 40% of Americans of Ellis Island heritage, which is also regrettable as this was the best tool for learning the names of the parents of immigrants so you could then extend your research overseas. I’m very disappointed in this decision and truly can’t grasp what has caused the Administration to put such a severe restriction in place – far in excess of that of most states that have limits on death certificate access – but I wanted to at least let the genealogical community know as it would be unfortunate for others to spend money needlessly. Because this policy was never announced, I have spent money on four requests ($27 or $29 each) for people born in the 19-teens, only to receive documents of no value to me. You might want to let your friends in the genealogical community know. Joseph Martin Romeoville, Illinois
OK, I kept looking for my dad's family in the 1930 census for years. Finally, I used a new strategy. I had looked in the neighborhood around my mother's address with no luck. So, I expanded to the neighborhoods around 2 aunts, who, like my mother, had married into dad's family. I knew they all lived relatively close. While I had no luck with the first aunt, dad's folks were ON THE SAME PAGE with the 2nd aunt. Very excited. The family name was Nielsen and they were indexed under Milson. Try every which way you can; likely they are there. I find the Chicago Ancestors site helpful too, but the map is awfully crowded, so not as good for copying, enlarging, printing out, and annotating. Diane
Others may already be familiar with this site, but I Googled Chicago Catholic churches map yesterday and, among others, came up with http://www.yourmapper.com/list/165/1/catholic-churches/all-catholic-churches -in-the-chicago-archdiocese.htm It has some nice features. For example, you can type in your ancestor's address and see the nearest churches, or click on a church and see others in the area. Unfortunately, it's just existing parishes, but you could always print out a map and draw in the old parish churches. Someday maybe we'll have an online map that shows all the parishes, past and present. Diane
Diane Culhane sent a link that shows the location of current Catholic Churches in Chicago. She also commented that it would be nice to have a website that showed the location of Chicago Catholic Churches past and present. Diane, Have you looked at www.chicagoancestors.org ? This is a website created by the Newberry Library to help genealogy researches find information on Chicago. If you enter a current address in the search box and click the SEARCH button, you will receive a list that contains items you can look at around that area on a map of Chicago. One of the items that is on the list reads: Religious Institutions. If you click on the + sign, a drop down menu gives you a choice to look at Lutheran Churches, Catholic Churches and Synagogues near the address you typed. I checked this website and I found a listing and location on the map for St. Louis Church which was founded in 1850 and was destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire in 1871 and never reopened after the fire. So you can find past and present Chicago Catholic Churches at www.chicagoancestors.org .
