Thanks, can you tell me how to access the voter registration and city directory? Are they online? I know that in 1897 he was living at 123 Perry St. Chicago, Cook, IL. Thanks to everyone for your help. I found a second obit from his wife that says John Becker was dead before she remarried in 1901. I also got a family search record about his son Matthew. Thanks also for explaining the term graves. You "guys" are all so great. Jackie > >
Where was John born? Or at any way where do his sons say he was born? That could help a lot to sort the Johns. The Chicago Voters Reg books might help if you have an address for 1895 that might/maybe/possibly <G> be good in 1892. You might catch him in the city directories with Mamie, and you might catch mention of a death. This definition is from Raymond Johnson of the Chicago Genealogy Examiner, Sept 9, 2009. "For lack of a better comparison, a term grave could be looked at as a grave "rental" A term grave is an option usually chosen when a family cannot afford a "perpetual" grave site. It can be for any time frame specified in the contract between the purchaser and the cemetery but is usually 20-25 years. After the expiration of the "term" the family is usually given a specified length of time to purchase the grave in "perpetuity" In the case where a family decides to not renew the term or purchase the grave in perpetuity than the ground is built up a few feet above the previous grave and the marker (if there is one) is either thrown away or placed on top of the previous grave. The grave is then available for a new burial on top of the old burial with it's new respective marker. I got some information from St. Boniface Cemetery in Cook County that said 2 of my relatives were in term graves. What is a term grave? Do they dig the bodies up and move them after a certain amount of time? They were buried in 1879 and 1899. > > To post a message to the COOK-CO-IL mailing list, send an email to COOK-CO-IL@rootsweb.com > . > > __________________________________________________________ > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to COOK-CO-IL-request@rootsweb.com > with the word "unsubscribe" without the quotes in the subject and > the body of the > email with no additional text. > > > End of COOK-CO-IL Digest, Vol 7, Issue 10 > ***************************************** >

I need some help to break down a brick wall regarding Joseph Kornatowski and his wife, Theresa Gruszczynska. Joseph was born March 17, 1894 in Montreal, Canada. There are two Peter Thompson's listed in the 1910 Census, both age 50; one is living in the 27th Ward whose occupation is a woodwork carver (shaper?), and the otherr is living in the 17th Ward whose occupation is dry sea sailor (huh?). I'm guessing this just confuses things more. I think it says "shaper." The letter p in Thompson looks like the letter in the occupation. But what did he shape? Wood (carpentry of some sort)? Fabric (clothing)? The possibilities are endless. Unfortunately, I can't find shaper on lists of old occupations, perhaps because it's so general. Diane
I would suggest that Peter was a shaper, which I believe had something to do with tool and die work. I hope this doesn't violate any list rules here. I found this on another of my lists. Seems to be real. How many of our genealogy sites would this effect if passed? This bill includes any site that has user-uploaded files including email list groups such as this one. Other valuable web sites which would be affected are Wikipedia, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Google and Yahoo. Ebay and Amazon are protesting SOPA even though they are not particularly vulnerable. What will probably happen is that the large hosting sites will end up policing themselves but sloppily, rather than wait for the government to shut them down for only one (1) copyright violation. So, if a host, (Wikipedia) for instance, thinks there is a copyright violation, rather than checking it out (costly) they'll just remove the item. The blackout will last for 12 hours, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Some sites will just put up a banner allowing people to click through to the site. Other sites may not allow you to click through for the 12 hours. Many of the major sites are against the "Stop Online Piracy Act" (SOPA). The bill just doesn't cover music but it seems to be fueled by the music, movie, and graphic artist industry though it will affect written material as well and that's where the genealogy lists come in. I am sorry to say that a Texas Representative came up with SOPA. http://news.cnet.com/8301-31921_3-57329001-281/how-sopa-would-affect-you-faq/ For more information about SOPA: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stop_Online_Piracy_Act Forbes article: http://tinyurl.com/6rjaztn Debbie
