    3. My error, I was indexing WW2 draft records and most of them were born at the end of the century, probably too old for WW2, but old enough to be an immigrant listing their country and town where they came from.  Not all of them though  Ann

    3. A million thanks to Ruth Susmarski - she has solved the Joseph & Theresa Kornatowski mystery for me!!!  She found an obit for one of Joe's brothers-in-law with Theresa Konackee listed.  So, Joe did change his last name - why he said his parents were born in Canada in the 1930 census will remain a mystery to us.  Ruth also found Joe and Theresa buried in the Royal Palm cemetery in Pinellas County, FL.   Doing the genealogy "happy dance."   Barb P.

    3. Using google.com you will find posts to help you; search for Signe Ostberg; and Duane Schwarm. http://genforum.genealogy.com/il/messages/47364.html Posted by Nancy Lund Salmon, August 30, 2010 I have some information about Hulda Kristina Melin she would have been my great grandmother. She immigrated from Sweden in the early 1920's and lived in Christine, North Dakota until her death in 1953. She lived with her daughter Anna L. Hanson (Melin) my great aunt and passed away in Moorhead Minnesota in 1978. My mother was born to Hulda's son Nils Gustaf Melin and her mother was Signe Otilia Ostberg in January 1924. My mother also had an older brother named Leonard Melin. Any info about my grandmother Signe Melin/Carlson/Schwarm??? would be greatly appreciated. She lived in Illinois. Possibly married someone with the last name Carlson or Schwarm. ------------------------- Duane Schwarm died in 2010 and you have received his obituary.  He posted on genforum and received some helpful responses. http://genforum.genealogy.com/il/cook/messages/4517.html I am searching for possible husbands or relationships of SIGNE OTILIA (OTILLIA) OSTBERG who immigrated in 1922 from Sweden and was bound for Christine N. Dakota to marry NILS(NELS) GUSTAF ERIK MELIN. I can find no evidence that the marriage occured except that her alledged maiden name was listed on my birth certificate as MALINE. It is also known that she went to Chicago (where I was born in 1933) - my father being ERNEST ROSCOE SCHWARM of Fayette County, Illinois. She may have married a fellow with the surname of CARLSON, as was listed as her previous name on the marriage certificate to my father Ernest. I just learned that SIGNE left a child in foster care in Sweden, who turns out to be my half-sister, and who is alive and well at age 84. When Signe immigrated to America, she left a son Leonard Melin, who came to America in 1923, when he was one year old, with his uncle, Fritz Melin.  You may find records of his birth in Sweden.  This page and next page.  They were going to the mother of Fritz Melin, Hulda Melin, grandmother of Leonard Melin, in South Dakota. http://www.ellisisland.org/search/shipManifest.asp?pID=602306040049 In 1930, Leonard was living with his grandmother, Hulda Melin, in North Dakota, along with his sister Alice, who was born in Hennepin County, Minnesota. http://people.mnhs.org/bci/Results.cfm Melin, Alice Marie Date of Birth: 22 Jan 1924 Mother Maiden Name: Ostberg Leonard Melin and his wife Helen died in 1991 in Montana. http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gsr&GSiman=1&GScid=942983&GSfn=&GSln=Melin Signe Schwarm died September 20, 1985 in Portland, Oregon, as a result of injuries in an automobile accident.  Survivors included her husband, Ernest, and children Duane Schwarm and Rita Yvonne (Gregory) Jacques, b. We know about Signe's history between 1933 (when she married Eugene SCHWARM) until her death, but not about her whereabouts and possible marriages/children between 1922 (when she arrived in US) and 1933. Signe was born ÖSTBERG (American spelling OSTBERG), and emigrated from Sweden to US in 1922. She possibly left for USA with Nils Gustaf (or Fritz) MELIN (possible US spelling MALINE or similar). According to the Ellis Island ship records, Signe's destination was the town CHRISTINE, ND., where Nils Gustaf's (Fritz's) mother, Hulda MELIN, lived. Nils Gustaf's (Fritz's) listed his nearest relative in Sweden according to the ship records as his aunt, Karin MELIN, who lived at Folkungagatan 18 B in STOCKHOLM. The above findings have made me wonder whether Signe first settled with Nils Gustaf or Fritz MELIN/MALINE, and even married him, or if she went on from North Dakota to for instance Illinois (which some people have guessed, and which is the reason to why I joined this list) and from there to Oregon, where she finally met with her husband-to-be Eugene. I am extremely grateful for every kind of information that can shed some light on Signe's life during this period. 3. Did Chicago circa 1890 have detailed marriage applications that contain the names of the parents of the bride and groom, and other identifying information? I have a basic marriage certificate that just shows the names of the bride and groom and the marriage date. If so, how might I go about finding it? Many thanks!

I found several Herman Carlson obituaries, but none that mentioned your Ruth. Unfortunately, Cook County marriage records for the 1920s are not yet on line. However, the county Web site cookcountygenealogy.com shows two Ruth Carlson births at about the right time, one in June 1927 and the other July 1928. Depending on the date of the census, you might order one or both of those and see if either is yours. Good luck! Diane
