First, collect the census information, birth/death certs, that you'll find for free at familysearch.org, then go from there. We all subscribe to various databases and would be happy to help with look-ups -- which translates to "don't spent any $$" until you need to :) Kate in Chicago
I am new to these board and apologize if you receive this multiple times. Actually I am sending this for my wife:) Her Chicago surnames are Elmore, Morris, Finn , Grelish. Years are approximately 1890 through 1950 or so. Elmores came from Virgina: Morris, Finn Grelish from Ireland. All Catholic. Many of the burials are in the River Grove area....we have not found any local newspapers from there that might cover marriages and obituaries in more detail. A grandpa was a Chicago policeman. Are those records available anywhere? Employee magazines? Another was a "motorman" on the Chicago Surface Lines per her notes. Any employee magazines or employee records there? Thanks Ray
Janet, here's the death record for the Rose McCaffrey McDermott who died in Chicago in 1917, with different parents from the one you're seeking: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/N3P3-SHG Diane
Thanks, Joseph. I have done that. That is how I know the little I do. They have no record of her after she left in 1866. I need suggestions. I am researching a woman named Rose (Rosa/Rosanna) McCaffrey, born Ireland about 1839. She married in Chicago in 1872 to Bernard J. (aka John) McDermott, and died in 1917. I think she may be the same Rosanna McCaffrey who was a daughter of Thomas McCaffrey and Rosa Stinson/Stevenson, who lived in Franklin County NY. She is mentioned in her father's will (he died 1872) as living in Chicago. Oddly, she appears in NO census records with the family, not even the 1850 when she would have been 11 yrs old. Her parents first emigrated from ireland to Canada, then about 1848-49, moved down into NY state. She MAY be the same Rosanna McCaffrey who was from 1862--1866 in the Daughters of Charity of Emmitsburg, Md., and who nursed Civil War soldiers at Satterlee Hospital. If these are all the same woman, I am trying to figure out where she was from the time her family came to Canada and the U.S. until 1872. I'd love to find her in Chicago in 1870, but have not yet. Was she working as a nurse? In another Order of sisters? On her own? Any ideas for where to look next are welcome! Thanks, Janet C

Linda J. and Lana K., thank you for your help with the Joseph Dul family. I now have the image printed and am good to go. And another big thanks to Linda for some extra help with my research on the John Poczatek family! Ruth
Sorry for the confusion, but the family name appears to be indexed as DUE rather than DUL and they are living in Kronenwetter (Marathon Co.), Wisconsin in 1930. They were in Chicago in 1920 where the children were born (except Anna, who was born in Poland), and I certainly place them in Chicago in later years. Would still appreciate help with this census image, if someone wouldn't mind. Researching family of HARRY EDWARD HANES born about 1931 in Chicago Veteran of Korean war--wounded there. Any information will be appreciated. Thank you.
I checked the 1920 Enumeration District map on A Look at Cook, and it appears Park (134 South) became Maypole at some point. Diane
I'm trying to determine the parish in which some ancestors lived, but can't find the street on today's maps. The 1910 census says they lived at 4343 West Park Ave. in the 34th Ward, the 1920 at 4302 Park Ave. in the 35th Ward. I can't find a Park Ave. today, and the last street renaming I know of was in 1911. Any ideas? Diane
Henry Grier's obituary found on ProQuest and sent to Sid under separate cover. Henry died April 5, 1928, and his obituary appeared in the Chicago Tribune on April 8, 1928. Not in the Chicago Tribune (America's Obituaries or ProQuest). You might check the Chicago Daily News. Microfilm available through interlibrary loan. Diane

I have no idea how to find the institutions by themselves, I find them looking for people. I have a bunch of connections (I track all my family and then if they died and the mate remarries I track them too) who all ended in institutions. But I would think you could find the institution in a city directory and then find the ED and work that way.
