    1. [COOK-CO-IL] Find-A-Grave
    2. Ruth Susmarski
    3. Regarding the Find-A-Grave discussion, I'm not sure whose property a headstone or monument is once installed on a grave or plot.  However, it would seem these loving tributes to the dead are placed partially with the intention of letting future generations know that these people once walked among us...that they are not forgotten.   Furthermore, cemeteries are open to the public so privacy rights would seem forfeit.  I've never been able to rationalize the stand of Dignity Memorial cemeteries, which do not allow photographs to be taken.  It's not like you're stealing the soul of the dead, and I don't buy into the identify theft argument...the 'bad guys' don't need cemeteries for that.   Well, anyway, that's my two cents worth on the subject.   Ruth "The life of the dead is placed in the memory of the living." - Cicero

    1. [COOK-CO-IL] SCATTERGOOD Family Photograph
    2. Shelley Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Otis SCATTERGOOD which was taken at the G. W. Stewart Studio in Bluffton, Indiana. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1880's with Otis likely in his teens at the time. Based on limited research and thanks to a SCATTERGOOD Family Researcher I was able to gather the following information regarding Otis and his family: Otis Odell SCATTERGOOD was b. 18 Jun 1872 in Wells, IN to parents Charles Wesley SCATTERGOOD (b. 29 Jul 1849 in New Garden, OH d. 15 Jan 1928 in Ossian, IN) and Eliza Almira SOWLE (b. 28 Jan 1852 in Wells, IN d. 1924). Otis was one of 4 children born to this couple including, Isaac Euclydes; Otis Odell; Milton Everett; and J. Whitfield SCATTERGOOD, all born in Wells, IN and Dowagiac, MI between 1870 and 1879. Otis married Eva A. ALLEN (b. abt 1878 in IN) on 18 Jun 1902 in Anderson, IN and together they had a son, Allen SCATTERGOOD b. 10 Jul 1910 in IL. Otis d. 1958 in Lebanon, IN. Otis is buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Lebanon, IN. Census records provide the following information: 1910 census of Chicago, IL: Otis O. SCATTERGOOD, age 37, married 7 years, born IN, parents born OH/IN, Asst. Newspaper Circulation Mgr. Eva A. SCATTERGOOD, wife, age 32, married 7 years, no children, born IN, parents born NC/IN + 1 Lodger 1920 census of Chicago, IL: Otis O. 3. Joseph, We had a speaker from NARA-Great Lakes at the South Suburban Genealogical & Historical Society's meeting earlier this month who spoke on military records. I believe he said that only Army and Army Air Force records were destroyed in the 1973 fire. Naval records from WWII are available. He also had a pamphlet available that says that Navy, Marine and Coast Guard records were not affected by the fire in St. Louis in 1973. Check the NARA website for the proper form(s) that you need to fill out. As a next-of-kin, you should have no problems obtaining your father's naval service records. This is a website referred to in the pamphlet about WWII service records: http://archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/get-service-records.ht ml . I hope this helps you. I tried again in an online request in the name of my husband as next of kin and got about 35 pages of records a few weeks ago. It took about 10 weeks because NARA had to stabilize the files before they could copy them. Some of the records have clear burn marks around the edges. It cost $60, same as an IDPF. 3.    The Records Center in St. Louis did suffer a catastrophic fire - however - about half the records were "lost". I had a friend [now gone] who worked there and was able to recover a few of the records that began with "Le...". But any records I wanted earlier in the alphabet were "poof". Even to get what she did - only because she worked there - was difficult. Everything was encased in plastic and she had to wear white "darkroom gloves" to handle the remaining pieces. I NEVER would have gotten the few bits of info I did if she hadn't helped. Some pieces were too small and charred to handle - think of piecing the Dead Sea Scrolls.    On the other hand, when did the military EVER do anything that wasn't in triplicate - those copies had to go somewhere. Any ideas anyone? Toni H.
