I have a new brick wall: Katherine Goetzelman(n) was buried at Waldheim Cemetery 31 May 1882, at age 56, so born abt 1826. There is no burial card & no headstone. I cannot find a death record on familysearch. A friend searched her ancestry & came up empty handed. Googling the name brought up nothing. My guess is that she is a sister-in-law of my gr gr grandmother Barbara Goetzelmann Schaetzlein. Or, if Barbara was not married when she had her first 2 children in Oberaltertheim Germany, Barbara's maiden name could have been Goetzelmann, making Katherine her sister or sister-in-law. The first burial in the Waldheim plot was Michael Schaetzlein (d. 1876), the next was Katherine. Michael is the 2nd husband of Barbara, so Katherine was technically not related to him. I have plenty of info on the entire Goetzelmann/Schaetzlein family, except this newly discovered Katherine Goetzelman(n). Can someone with access to the Daily News or Trib obits look up an obit for Katherine (or Catherine) Goetzelman(n)? I won't be surprised if there is none, but I need to cover all the bases. Thanks in advance. Judy, in Alaska, where we now have had 133.6" snow. Enjoy your warm temps, Chicago.
Hi Mary, Go to the Stephen Morse web page and scroll down to the 1940 census section. Click on the 1940 Finder. It might be the first one. Then enter the state and address and follow the directions. Kim, The name of the church appears to be St. Brendan which was located at 67th Street and Racine Avenue. St. Brendan was closed and merged in September 1988 with St. Bernard Parish. All records are at the Archdiocese of Chicago Archives & Records Center, 711 West Monroe Street, Chicago, Illinois 60661. Telephone: (312) 831-0711. Since you are familiar with the digital images at familysearch.org, go to the database: Illinois, Chicago, Catholic Church Records, 1833-1925. This is a browsable (not indexed as yet) database. In the window with the list of all the United States databases, scroll down to the Illinois, Chicago, Catholic Church Records, 1833-1925 hyperlink and click on that. Another window will open with a hyperlink that says something about Browse This Database. Click on that hyperlink. Another window will open up which gives you a listing of all the churches in this database. Scroll down to St. Brendan and click on that hyperlink. Another window will open with a list of the various records that are available. Click on a hyperlink to open the list of Baptisms or other sacramental records and start clicking through the images until you find something of interest. It is like using a microfilm reader without the microfilm. Have noticed a very nice feature of the 1940 census, in that it shows the number of years of education a person had. For those with immigrant ancestors, that gives some insight into life in the "old country." Two of my Irish grandparents said they had 8 years, the other two only 4 and 3. All were born in the 1870s, emigrated in the 1890s. Diane
Go to MyHeritage.com They have all the images online. Ancestry is trailing at this point.
