Does anyone on the list have access to a street map of Chicago in the 1870's? My great, great grandparents, John Carney and Mary Duffy, had a son, Patrick William Kearney, who died at age 3 in 1879. The death certificate lists the address as N.E. Corner of Halstad at Hastings. When I look at today's map, I see that Hastings Street doesn't connect with Halstad. Pat, I found the following University of Chicago website with 1870s maps available: http://www.lib.uchicago.edu/lib/public/full_screen.html?http://www.lib.uchicago.edu/e/su/maps/chifire/G4104-C6-1872-B5/ Look for Blue Island Ave running at a diag sw to ne to help you find Hastings. I don't see an intersection with Halstad. It looks like Hastings ends a couple of blocks East of Halstad or that Hastings is renamed to Maxwell after the intersection with Blue Island Ave. Dan ----- Original Message ----- From: "Pat Spears" <spearspat@hotmail.com> To: <cook-co-il@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, April 27, 2012 11:54 AM Subject: [COOK-CO-IL] Hastings at Halstad Does anyone on the list have access to a street map of Chicago in the 1870's? There seem to be several by this name. Try: www.pgsa.org It's the Polish Genealogical Soc. of Amer. and there is a link near the bottom for the SSDI. Thank you Eliz. As one who is still searching for proof of my family going to Chicago from Glasgow, I found the information enlightening. Daily ships with so many people, looking for a new life. Just like the thousands who left Great Britain in the 1950's to go to Australia. We still had rationing here, things were tough, but the war was over and we had hope for the future. Sheila. I am having a problem reading the 1930 census for a address on a relative who lived in Ohio, Cleveland City. The street number is unreadable (for me) I know when he died and where and there is a death certificate. But, I no longer have Ancestry where it gives his home address in 1942 when he died, a death cert. is shown. Is there someone who has Ancestry that can either copy his death cert. or what his home address is in 1942. Here is his name, etc. DUNNE, John J. Death date: 2/24/1942, Hamilton County Volume #, Certificate #10738 Also, a question for the list. What does it mean when in the 1940 census a page is black, when you go to next page most times its there, but a couple of times that page too is black. What does this mean? It jumps ahead in the image block to the next image. Just wondering if its just not there or the system can't bring it up? Thank you for any help. Carol
I had good luck finding people in Rhode Island. I've found about 15 of my families. However, I'm running into the same problem as Thomas for my husband's family in Chicago. I was looking for 5638 Drake. It's possible my family wasn't there in 1940 because the address comes from the WWII draft registration from 1942, but the house should be there. It's ED 103-2494. I found Drake in this group, but there are many weird things here. There were 3 or 4 houses in the 5600's enumerated, but there are also many lines of information erased here and there, where you can see a family was listed, then erased and on these lines the enumerator wrote "extra lines", and cancel on the left side of the sheet. On one page there is a note that says "extra houses" LOL Then, starting about 4 pages from the end, the sheets have no street names. He did write in block numbers here, but no names. I'm guessing some of these houses are Drake since he missed so many the first time through, but they belong to more than one street because I found at least two with the same house number. I spent some time over the weekend helping find someone on Staten Island, NY and we ran into many missing house numbers. Using the enumeration district maps, and not just the descriptions, we were in the right place. I'm also having trouble finding an address in Northampton, MA. Again, I have the street, but the house number seems to be missing. I wonder if these missing addresses were gathered later by mail or by visits to the homes at a later date, and if so, where is this information?
