I'm trying to locate information and/or an obituary for: Joseph Vrba, born May, 1898, son of Marten and Mary Vrba, possibly married to Sophie Kolodzey in 1918, died July, 1973. Also a Louis Vrba, 30 years old in the 1910 Census, and likely the step-father of Joseph, found a draft registration card for Joseph above with Louis mentioned but otherwise the trail goes cold. Any help/direction would be most appreciated. By the way, this is a great list, thanks to all. Sue.
I wonder if some kind soul could help me find a marriage. My gt gt uncle, David John Rowlands, married Laura (maiden name unknown), possibly in Cook County in 1891. They both originally came from Caernarvonshire in Wales, he emigrated to the US in 1886. Eventually they went to live in Redgranite, Wisconsin and they appear on the census there in 1920, 1930 and 1940. His father's name was John Rowlands. Do you need more information? Many thanks Eirian Evans
Eirian, He married Laura Williams on 24 Dec 1891 in Cook County, IL. You can view the marriage record on FamilySearch.com. I've received helpful information on HRYHORIJ and PARASKEVIA, but the jury is still out on HRYC, so I'll check out the resources you provided. The family was from the village of Lubno in far SE Poland (Sub-Carpathian region), very close to the current border with Ukraine, and the family spoke both languages. The rest of my family branches are from the far North Central part of Poland, including some Kashube near Gdansk, and spoke Polish and German. Several of the given names in the branch I'm currently researching, really stand out as because of the Ukrainian/Russian proximity and the history of Poland's Partitions. It is new and unfamiliar territory to me...but I'm learning. Thanks for your help. HRYC sure looks to me like it would get transliterated to Horace, but that is just a guess from eyeballing the name. He is now 90 years old and suffers with Parkinson's disease. The letter stated that their personnel located my Dad's file. It continued "Because the veteran was completely discharged from the military more than 62 years ago, the Official Military Personnel File is now considered an 'archival' record." Thus, it is now a public record. I can request photocopies of his file for ONLY $60. Interestingly, the return reply envelope is addressed to NARA in St. Louis, which means the files have been moved. Thank you Debra. That is interesting and really narrows down when my Gt. Gt. Grandfather died in July of that year. I haven't previously noticed the census date on Familysearch and will look for it in the future. Many thanks again. Sheila. Hello listers Can someone please tell me the date on which the census was taken in 1865? My Gt. Gt. Grandfather George Barnsfather died in July 1865 but I cannot find him on the census for that year. His wife is there as Mrs. M Barnsfather, with the children. In GB our census is taken in the spring. Thank you for any assistance. Sheila.

The most recent census available to us at present is the 1940 census, due to a 72-year privacy restriction. While the questions in U.S. census records varied from year to year and in state censuses, from state to state, you can find information like names of other household members, ages, birthplaces, residence, occupation, immigration and citizenship details, marriage information, military service and more. The 1890 census was largely destroyed in a fire, but we have compiled a “substitute” with various other records to help bridge the gap. Thanks, Bobbi. I'm still laughing. I, too, had a Pelagia in the family, and she first went by Pearl and then later by Bessie. Thanks, Ann. Been there, done that. Got an answer to one of my three questions. Wikipedia is a helpful tool, but I prefer to seek out more reliable sources. To Lisa and others who were part of this earlier discussion, Today I received a letter from the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis regarding my March 21 request for the World War II U.S. Navy Records for my Dad. I have already found 28 U.S. World War II Navy Muster Rolls (1938-1949) for him on Ancestry. I hope that his file will have some additional records with many more details for my $60. Wish me luck. My check is in the mail. This is not Cook County related, exactly, although many members of this family branch did settle in Chicago. Anyone out there have knowledge of Ukrainian given names that can help with the following? Google just isn't doing it... Could HRYHORIJ translate to GEORGE? Could PARASKEVIA translate to PAULINE? Also, is HRYC a short form of HRYHORIJ? Thank you Dan and Diane for your help in solving my query about Hastings and Halstad Streets. The map was great. I bookmarked it. Pat Spears 678-404-5862 (home phone) spearspat.blogspot.com (my genealogy blog)

My great, great grandparents, John Carney and Mary Duffy, had a son, Patrick William Kearney, who died at age 3 in 1879. The death certificate lists the address as N.E. Corner of Halstad at Hastings. When I look at today's map, I see that Hastings Street doesn't connect with Halstad.
