We lived in Chicago when my daughter was born in 1953 at Great Lakes Naval Dependent's Hospital, Great Lakes, Illinois. We had to send to the State of Illinois for her birth certificate, Maybe that is where you should try. Good luck. "dupage highlands" as a 1926 suburb of Chicago My late husband, DeLoe Robert Hiatt, Jr. was born 1 Jan 1927 in "Dupage Highlands, Chicago, Illinois" -- and we never could find a birth certificate. Some time in the 1950's, Bob tried to get a copy -- and was told that the courthouse had burned down. The family story is that there was a mumps epidemic -- and a blizzard -- when Bob was born on New Year's Day, 1927. In the household (address unknown) were his father, DeLoe Robert Hiatt, Sr. (b. 1896 Winchester, Randolph County, Indiana; railroad telegrapher) his mother, Hazel Eagy Hiatt (b. 1895 Union City, Randolph County, Indiana; his older brother, Howard Hershell Hiatt (or Hershell Howard Hiatt -- unclear, because of family stories and no documentation). Howard was 12 years old -- and had a serious case of the mumps -- and his mother's Aunt Nan (probably Nancy Abigail Eagy, born 13 July 1844 -- who raised Hazel after the death of her mother in 1895 -- just a few days after giving birth to Hazel). Also visiting was "Doc" Huddleston (probably medical doctor A.F. Huddleston of Winchester, Indiana, a colleague and friend of DeLoe Sr's father, Enos Riley Hiatt -- with whom he would die in an automobile accident in 1936 -- traveling together from Indiana to Florida on Christmas Day -- ). So. Bob was born, Aunt Nan died -- there was a blizzard -- Howard was 12 and very sick with the mumps -- and so were his parents. And there was an important visitor in the house. In today's world, there would have been a newspaper article, at least something in the "social notes" (:-) I can't find anything. Sigh. (I should NOT be complaining -- five years ago we didn't have a clue as to who anyone was -- now I've got names, birthdates, stories, even big newspaper articles about the automobile accident in 1936. But this is BOTHERING me. Bob's been dead for four years now, and I'm still looking in to this! I'm trying to figure out whether I should be looking in Cook County -- or DuPage County -- for birth and death information. Can someone help me on this? Is there a city directory for 1926 where I could look up the HIATT family? Census doesn't help -- by 1930, the family was in another state. Same for 1920. "Telegrapher" must have been a mobile job -- as family stories also put DeLoe Sr. in Cleveland while the Hope Memorial Bridge was being built (Lorain-Carnegie bridge, later re-named for Bob Hope, a native son) -- and his brother Rhea S. Hiatt, also a telegrapher, in Chicago by the 1930's -- where HE died in the 1940's. I used to think it was odd that the sons traveled so much -- until I found more ancestry information -- and HIATT family members have been on the move since the emigration from England on William Penn's second ship -- and they've been Quaker forever -- until Howard's -- and then -- DeLoe Sr.'s conversion to 7th Day Adventist -- Another story. If you're a fan of Jethro Kloss's Back to Eden, DeLoe Sr. was the publisher. Enough. I do write LONG when I'm telling family stories. Thanks for reading this -- and for any help offered to me. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Henrietta WATKINS which was taken at the Hartley Studio in Chicago, Illinois. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1880's with Henrietta likely in her teens or 20's at the time. Based on limited research I was able to locate information regarding Henriette WATKINS married to Jonathan F. BURLINGAME on 7 March 1892 in Cook Co., IL. I am hoping to locate someone from her family so that this beautiful old photograph can be returned to its rightful place with family. If you are a member of this family, or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

If anyone can access these archived obits, I am looking for the obit of William PEDERSEN, Chicago area. He died in the 1960's-70's I am told. His wife survived him and was named Hazel. Thank you, MeLani
> Our family has old photos from the LaSalle and Livingston counties. I am writing to the Chicago list because it is thought that perhaps this family moved to Chicago. Our ancestor, Johann Juergen Meyer married Mary Timm, each had children from their previous marriages. My brother in law is in possession of an album which has many photographers photos and they list various Timm children and their spouses. If anyone is interested in this family line, please contact me privately and I can put you in touch with the person who has the album. We have removed all the pictures of our direct ancestors but all these beautiful pictures exist and it would be nice to return them to whoever might be interested. Sophie > > Today's Topics: > > 1. Could someone get on this URL and obtain an obit on IRVING JOHN MULDOWNEY who died on 28 Oct 06. Obit would have been in the 30 - 31 Oct timeframe. He was from Hickory Hills, Illinois. He is my nephew from my half-brother's side of the family. I treid, but do not have the authority to use this site. Many thanks, Robin Dombrowsky for sending me Jessie Alexander's immigration record. I'll now need to try to check the US census to see whether there were any children. Cheers from Downunder Des
Hi Bert, This is a Cook County, Illinois list. You may have better luck posting to a New Mexico list. Before you do that, you will likely need to narrow down the date - and place - of death. I'm not familiar with NM research, but you could start by checking the Social Security Death Index (SSDI) at rootsweb.com. A quick search of that database found the following: OLIVER F WERGIN 21 Aug 1905 11 Jul 1998 (V) 88312 (Alto, Lincoln, NM) 391-28-2905 Wisconsin AND! OLIVER F WERGIN 29 Mar 1932 09 Feb 1999 (V) 88312 (Alto, Lincoln, NM) 398-28-6539 Wisconsin A good place to start might be to email a library in that area. I'm a Reference Librarian in Citrus County, Florida and do those types of requests almost daily. Another free database at Rootsweb is the Obituary Daily Times, which comes up with the following: WERGIN, Oliver F; 92; Ruidoso NM; Milwaukee J-S (WI); 1998-9-17; mschears I'm not sure how to decipher all of that, but it should be easy to find out which library serves Ruidoso, NM. They would probably be your best source for the full obituary. WorldConnect (find it with a rootsweb search) has two hits you will want to see. You'll probably have to visit a library with Ancestry to view the records, unless you have a subscription. I recently came into some photographs that were found in the attic of my great-grandmother's house in Vermont; they are apparently members of my great-grandfather's family. None of the photographs are labeled, and none of them say when the picture was taken. I'm trying to figure out time frames from photographer's name if that's possible, and that's where my question comes in. One of the pictures is of a young boy - possibly ten years old or so, and it was taken by a photographer in Chicago called, "The Bell," on 96 State Street. Has anyone ever heard of this place? I can't find reference to it anywhere through Google. Thank you! Kathy Campbell Jacksonville, FL
