Here are some living people to trace. You can also contact the cemetery and mortuary to see if Ida is buried there. Since she seems to be Jewish, Ida's tombstone should also have the name of her father on it. You can send away for the social security applications for both Melvin and Herbert. Mother's maiden name is listed there as well. Jackye Sullins San Diego Melvin Hertzberg married Roslyn Kemp in 1938. The Hertzbergs lived at 4631 N. Avers Ave., Chgo. 1984-12-05 Roslyn I. This seems pretty basic. Ordering the social security application information is expensive but definitely a great source. I remember when they were free! I also think you should follow the children. The doctor should be fairly easy and you could contact living people and ask them for yourself. You can also track them both through Ellis Island using Stephen Morse's website. It's very possible given large families in those days that there was 20 years between two siblings. I've just discovered that my grandmother had a much older brother who left home when she was very young. Sounds like a great database..do you know which database? Thank you Lucille In a message dated 11/21/2006 , sjlbuethner-sheminee@att.net writes: Then, just a few months ago, I was going through a new data base that our local college library had put on-line --- and there, much to my shock was a filing for DIVORCE by my Grandfather.
Hi Lucille, I have found that many States have databases on-line, at various different sites. Most are not part of Ancestry or any other genealogy subscriptions. They are well worth your time, in trying to locate. This particular database is part of our University [North Dakota State University], which has a Division of Regional Studies. For example, here is a marriage record index for Cass County, North Dakota. http://www.lib.ndsu.nodak.edu/ndirs/bio&genealogy/casscountymarri ages.html >From that page, click on Biography & Genealogy, at the top. Or, click here - http://www.lib.ndsu.nodak.edu/ndirs/bio&genealogy/index.html You will see from the menu on the left, the databases they have on- line. The one I found Gramps filing for Divorce is the Divorce Records, 1870 - 1942. I knew my uncle had filed for divorce, and was looking for the dates when I stumbled on Grampa [same surname]. This Library also has a large collection of Germans From Russia, which may be worth the time to look at, if you have relatives that are Germans From Russia. And to keep this Cook County related, Grandpa was born in Cook County and both he and a brother moved to Cass Co., ND. I found Ida Hertzberg b. 1891 Latvia living in Chicago in the 1930 census. She immigrated in 1895 so you could track her through Ellis Island. Her husband is Joseph and her children are Mevia, Deena and Herbert. The oldest being 15. Ida was 23 when she married, so that would be about 1918. Ida and Joseph are in Chicago Ward 34 in the 1920 census. In 1910 Ida Weintraub b. 1891 Russia is a boarder in Manhattan, NY. Immigration date for this Ida is 1908. Language spoken is Yiddish. She is living with Louis Perlman, Benjamin Perlman, Fannie Perlman, Mary Perlman, Jacob and Katie Rothenberg all born in Russia. I do believe that even if married by a Justice of the Peace, a license would still be needed. Have you checked with Lake County, Indiana? Many from Cook Co. went to Lake Co., IN to get married. After doing genealogy for 38 years, I was about to give up on finding my Grandparents marriage record. I was even thinking that they maybe had a "common law" marriage. Then, just a few months ago, I was going through a new data base that our local college library had put on-line --- and there, much to my shock was a filing for DIVORCE by my Grandfather. The on-line info said that it was a filing, only, and that there were no return papers [in other words, they did not go through with the divorce, just filed the papers]. There, in pen and ink was the date and place of their marriage. Many years ago, Grandpa told me the date and place -- he had the date correct but not the place. Ironically, it is only one county South of me. Moral of this story is to never give up. Grin. I am looking for any one with connections to this family-- or any information on them. Emma Marx Sobeck and her husband August Sobeck came to Chicago on 2 Nov 1911 it said they were going to cousin Bertha Roed (Rued) at 2545 Milwaukee Ave. Chicago, IL I research Bertha and am trying to figure out whose cousin she is, or what relationship she may have to my gg aunt Emma Marx Sobeck. Bertha Hoppe was born Dec 1874 she arrived from Berlin in Dec 1893 coming through Baltimore to her uncle in Chicago. On 25 Feb 1895 she married Mathias (Mathew) Bohn/ Bohen. On 1 Apr 1896 their son Walter was born. Mathew died before 1908 as Bertha remarried then to Albert Roed (b. abt 1861 Norway) In all future census records and the WW1 draft cards, Walter adopted the ROED surname and he died in Mar 1963, Walter married Florence Kilmek b. Feb 1898 PA (d/o Frank and Katy) They had a son Walter Jr. b. 21 Jun 1918 died 9 Apr 1978 Polk Co. FL I have yet to find Bertha after 1910, or Albert. Thanks Laurie
I also am interested in marriage applications. If someone where to marry with a Justice of the Peace, would there be a marriage application involved? I can't find a marriage certificate for my grandparents who were married about 1920. I'm beginning to think that maybe they got married with a Justice of the Peace because I found out that those documents aren't kept after a time.
What church were they married in? If they were members of a Scandinavian Lutheran Church, many times the birth parish was listed as well as the year of immigration. Also check out the Rootsweb Norway site. Many Norwegian records are online including emigration records. Good luck Helene
Listers, I just receieved the church record of my great grandparents - William Walsh and Maggie Brady - 14 April 1895. The witnesses are John J. Meehan and Delia Brady. A passenger list from the SS Britannic 21 September 1888 shows a family of Bradys - no father is listed. Listed are: Mary Brady (wife - 46), Patrick Brady (farmer - 26), Kate Brady (22), Maggie Brady (16), Bridget Brady (13), Thomas Brady (10), and Annie Brady (8). Since Delia is a nickname for Bridget, this could be the family. However, I am stimied by the fact that the 1890 census does not exist. In 1900, Maggie is married to William and in that census. Are there any records that I could access to find this family? Can some kind sould access the 1900 census and see if these other people are in Chicago? Witnesses are not always a couple, but sometimes they are. Mr. Meehan may have ended up with Delia. Any help would be appreciated. Bill Karr in Peoria, IL., USA
Donna, Yes, there are marriage applications, but if you have the certificate, you have the application which is the top part of the certificate. The only other item contained in the applications is a signature (many times just an "x"). I have the marriage license for Mary Andersen & her 1st husband, Conrad Strand but there is no family information on the license. Now that I know that Mary/Marie Andersen is the birth mother of my grandmother, I am trying to find something to start with to find parental information on Mary. The only thing I know is that she was born Dec 1869 Norway & that she came to the United States when she was about 16 years old (according to the 1900 census). I have many grEAT! memories of Riverview too. They closed in 1967, after they had issued season tickets and announced their Spring opening. It was quite sudden.
