Hello all, I have a brick wall that's been bothering me for years. I cannot find my grandfather in the 1910 census for Cook Co. A thought just occurred to me though: GF was born at 1427 Byron Street in Chicago in 1905. In the 1910 census, his uncle is living at 1627 Byron St. did the numbers change in 1909/1911? My GF's name was Edwin RICKMAN, b. 1905 Chicago, son of Theodore Z., b. abt. 1883 Kentucky, and Adelaide RICKMAN, b. 1885 Chicago. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Donna
Jim, Thanx for your note. It seems we get a similar message annually, immediately after NGS or any other genealogy site offers itself for free. Followed by, "I've tried and all I can get is the home page because of the heavy traffic," or something similar. They have a kind thought, but will servers ever catch up to the # of genealogists? To all Listers who helped with the Sheffus queries: Thanks so much to all of you. Thanks for your time. I certainly do appreciate all you have done. These are the people I was looking for. Carolyn
There is a very brave man buried in Cook County. The VMI Corps of Cadets fought as a unit at the Battle of New Market, Virginia, on May 15, 1864. Two hundred fifty seven cadets were on the field. Ten cadets were killed in battle or died later from the effects of their wounds; 45 were wounded. The youngest participating cadet was fifteen; the oldest twenty-five. Could someone in Cook County please find and photograph the tombstone of: John Spraggins Hannah, VMI class of 1866, Chicago. If you could find some biographical information that would be wonderful! A group of Virginia Military Institute alumni are attempting to locate the graves of all of the cadets who fought in the Battle of New Market in the Civil War. You can visit their web page at http://www.augustagavmiaa.info/new_market_database.htm Read about the battle at http://www.vmi.edu/archives/Civil_War/cwnm.html. They contacted me about my ancestor who was a cadet then, and I volunteered to help them get the other graves photographed, knowing we have so many wonderful people on Rootsweb. ;-) Thanks, Sarah Reveley San Antonio, Texas

My experience was identical to Susan's. The site didn't work. I tried it twice with the same results. Someone must have thought they had opened it up but did not adequately test it. I was a member for a short time and never found anything useful except the library loan program which they did away with. You could have a book or microfiche sent to your home for 30 days etc. Now have to do interlibrary loan. They don't really have any good info online. I've been reading all the great input from everyone on Riverview, so I have to add my two cents in. I still live by "Riverview". It's now our 19th district police station, and shopping center and DeVry Institute for learning. We now call ourselves "Roscoe Village Neighbors" we changed the name from "Riverview Neighbors" quite a few years back. I skated for many years at the Old Riverview Roller Rink. Many, many of our friends including my Husband worked at the park. Ralph Lopez, who has many artifacts from the Park and worked for many years at the park, still lives in our neighborhood. At our once a year- 2 day- 5 block -Neighborhood festival every August "Roscoe Village Neighbors has our "Retro on Roscoe Festival" Ralph Lopez puts up his Riverview stand and has different memorabilia. and if you can remember the big half Moon that you sat on and had your picture taken well Ralph has that and at our Festival and we old Riverview people still stand in line to get our pictures taken on it. But I will say living in the neighborhood during the time that the park was still open had its bad side. Parking issues, crime, tons of people walking around the neighborhood. of the closing, I can't help but think that the crime was a bigger issue, of all the reasons for closing. As different types of people flooded the park, and neighborhood, there was no time that it went problem free. So if your ever in Chicago the first weekend in August sat & sun come on over to our street fest "Retro on Roscoe"( were on Roscoe from Leavitt to Damen). And stop by Ralphs stand for some great memories !
