    1. [COOK-CO-IL] P. E. Church
    2. Hi List, A friend has a marriage license from Chicago in 1872 which says they were married in the P. E. Church by a pastor Johan/John H-----ings the wrting is hard to read. I am wondering if this is a Protestant Episcopal church, and if so how many were around? Also where would records for this be. I do not know that the couple lived there any lenght of time as the bride was in Ogle county with her family in 1870 and then back there by 1880. I am not sure why they married there. thanks Laurie

    1. [COOK-CO-IL] Documenting a common law marriage
    2. Martin, Joseph
    3. Would anyone know how to document a common law marriage? My great aunt Kathryn MARTIN was married in Pittsburgh, and her husband filed for divorce. But then he failed to show up for the court appearance, and so no divorce decree exists in the county file for them. She moved to Chicago about 1921 and met John RAAB about 1923, the year after he divorced his first wife. At some point John and Kathryn started a common law marriage. But how do I document that fact? I have a 1926 Chicago Tribune article about them in which John stated that they had been married for three years. I have photos of their tombstones which list them as husband and wife. I have her obituary which calls her the beloved wife of John. But the Cook County Court House could find no marriage record for them from 1922 when he was divorced to 1953 when Kathryn died. Any ideas about how to document their marriage? Joseph Martin Romeoville, IL

    2. The first writer on this subject mentions two addresses: 1516 N. Talman Ave. and 2317 W. North Ave. Since North Ave. is 1600 north and Talman Ave. is 2632 west, that family only moved a few blocks. The second writer refers to 1308 South Talman Ave. in the Douglas Park area. That is nowhere near 1516 North Talman Ave. in the Humboldt Park area. I have no idea what church of that denomination would have been in Humboldt Park. Perhaps someone with more knowledge of that area can help. Lois

Kathleen Anast If you have ancestors who died in Missouri you may be able to view the death certificate at this link http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/deathcertificates/#search Not all are viewable online yet, but they are working on it. I saw several other names that I'll be going back to check on every few weeks. If you are patient enough think of the fees you'll save!

    3. There's been a church merger in the years since then and a bit of a name change, but "Methodist Episcopal" in the old days, or "Methodist Episcopal South" for churches in more southernly states, almost always equates with United Methodist now. In the Chicago area, I'd bet that almost any church you find that calls itself "Methodist" today will have been ME back then, if it's been around long enough. --pig On 12/4/06 12:10, "MeLani M" <mmaysen@gmail.com> wrote: > Hello List, > How can I find out if there were many (or any?) 1. [COOK-CO-IL] Sarah/Sadie Lohan/Logan
    2. This is a real Hail Mary pass, but has anyone on the list run across a Sarah Lohan (Sadie Logan) born in Ireland in 1895, emigrated to Chicago, probably around 1915, and married a man with a German name (possibly beginning with K)? One of her Irish nephews recalls getting a letter from a son when they were young, but then the trail runs out. Can't find her in America's Obituaries or Ancestry's immigration collection. Thanks! 1. [COOK-CO-IL] FANNIN
    2. Ralph H Sayre
    3. I’m told that during the late 1800’s many miners and timber workers as well as farmers living in southwest Virginia and eastern Kentucky went to Wisconsin and Illinois to work. I have been unable to locate my ancestors, FANNIN, who lived in Wayne County, West Virginia 1850-1887. It appears that Silas and family lived on land of his father-in-law, John FERGUSON, Jr. in Butler District, Wayne County, WV. I found out the Silas performed marriages from about 1870 until about 1887, listed as minister in Wayne County Marriages. The 1887 listing is the last date I have for Silas. The earliest date is a listing in the estate of James Brumfield, Lawrence County, KY about 1840. Silas FANNIN was listed on the 1842 Lawrence County Tax List and was probably married 1841 or 1842. He married Mary "Polly" FERGUSON. Children of Silas and Mary (Ferguson) Fannin: Rebecca, b. 1850, (don’t know her married name); Jeremiah, b. 1855; George Washington, b. 1862; Mary Belle, b. 1864; Calista F., b. 1866, and William, b. 1868. I want any information on any family with the FANNIN (FANNON, FANNING) name who came from SW West Virginia or Eastern Kentucky to Illinois late 1880s to 1900. The name I am searching is Silas FANNIN.
