    3. Thanks Bonnie for the offer to scan the map and the University of Michigan library web site. I will order a reprint of the book. I have two maps of the fire. Both were either from the Library of Congress or the map collection at the University of Illinois. The UOI has a great online collection, the 1870 Chicago street map I talked about can be found there in high detail-- (map # 54) http://images.library.uiuc.edu:8081/cdm4/browse.php?CISOROOT=%2Fmaps I am working on stories that my grandparents lost everything in the fire. I hope to prove by location that this might be true. The family changed residence each year from 1874-1877 by the Chicago Directory and moved back to Norway sometime after the 1880 census was taken. They did return to Chicago in 1889! In 1872 they might have lived in Wheaton where my grandfather birth is noted. 3. Hi Al - I have a book, called the Great Conflagration, which has a lot of detail about the Chicago Fire. In that book is a copy of a map, showing the areas of the city which were affected by the fire. I would be glad to scan that area of the map and send it to you, if you would like. 1. [COOK-CO-IL] thank you for help
    2. Susan Husk
    3. While, after ten years of looking, I am not ready to say my family search is completed, I do want to say thank you to these lists for all the help, suggestions, lookups, and links that you have posted over the years. The time you, listers, have taken to answer questions and do lookups that took you away from your own research and helped only mine, is a valuable gift. It had taken these ten years to find, only recently, the black sheep of the family that we 'lost' in the 1930's and, also, to find a child taken by a non-custodial parent, also in the 1930's. Both were deceased by the time I found them, but there is a completion feeling in finding out what happened to them. Thank you for your willingness and your time, spent on my behalf. Now my research will focus on putting personality to the dates and places. There will be more questions, pleas for lookups, and requests for suggestion. Your experience and advice has been invaluable. I wouldn't have been able to do it without your help. Let's keep helping one another, so others can feel this sense of satisfaction that I feel about filling in hole in my personal history. 3. Hello My gr grandfather Anders Madsen Askevold, A.M. Askevold, 1842-1901. Born in Norway Anders had a 30 year history in Chicago, 1869 till his death in 1901. Anders was a printer/lithographer in Chicago and is noted for a few detailed maps lithographed in the 1870's. I'm researching the 1870-1871 family history and the Chicago fire of 1871. I hope some of you might help with two locations I find in the 1870-1871 Chicago Directory. Askervold Andrew, engraver, Merchants Lith. Co., r 11 Gold. I am pretty sure I found the locations on an old 1870 street map? Gold St.-- a one block street in the area of N.Halsted and W. Harrison now part of the University Of Illinois. Merchants Lithograph-- a few blocks north of the residence at Sangamom and W. Jackson (from an old Tribune advertisement) Can anyone confirm the above locations and if they were lost in the 1871 fire? By maps the area looks to be close to the western fire line. Anyone know where to find data on this 1870 Merchants Lithograph Co. ? Regards Al Askevold SW. Missouri

    3. It's a good link to have in the "arsenal". I checked against the "eight block perimeter around the stockyards" that I recently posted and the only differences were four churches added that were just outside my defined perimeter (I set 5500S as the southern limit and they were outside, but coded at 5500S) and one that was missed due to an error in the website's database that lists St Monica at 86th and Dearborn (hence 8600W) and it should be 36th and Dearborn. All in all, seems to be a pretty accurate tool to use.
