I'm helping a friend, her grandfather Oliver Pepper was born 24 Mar 1900 possibly in Chicago Illinois. Is there a vital records database that someone can look at to verify that he was born in Chicago, every Census he reports his birthplace as Kentucky, but the family says he was born in Chicago. The reason we don't look in Kentucky is we don't have a county in Kentucky, just Kentucky. Thanks for any help.
I was sent an article from the Chicago Daily Tribune dated Dec. 14 1940 about a Chicago street map my gr grandfather lithographed in 1878. This might be a daily article? " A Line O' Type or Two". In this article named "Map of Chicago, 1878" was a note of a Line's Reference library. Anyone know of this Line/Line's reference library? I asked the Newberry Library about this today in a phone call on another map issue and it's still an unknown. A short quote from the article-- "We have been cracking our eyeballs over a map of Chicago in 1878, contributed to the Line's reference library by Harry B. Roads of Terra Haute, Ind. It was published in street guide form by A. Askevold, room 67 Ashland block, northeast corner Clark and Randolph streets" I would like to find this map. The only clue is this one old article. There were more than one Sam Letos born about 1915 living in Chicago, listed in the 1920 and 1930 census enumerations: Sam, son of Rose and Andrew, brother of Andrew; Sam, son of Joseph and Cecilia, brother of Anna. Both families lived at 648 Reese St, along with Lucy Genevisa, mother of Rose Leto in 1930. Both of these Sams were born in Illinois. In 1930, there is a Sam, b. 1916 in Louisiana, living with his parents, Nat and Jennie on Erie Street; other children were Lena, Kathie, Joe, Nat, Frank, Mammie, Rose - all born in Louisiana. In 1930, a Rose, Andrew, children Sam, b. 1916 in IL, and daughter Anne were enumerated as living at 1303 Cornelia St. in 1930. In 1934, these boys would have been about 18. Are any of these likely candidates for your uncle, Paula? Mary
I know that many libraries in Cook County have the complete Trib on microfilm. Would it be possible to have your local library get an inter-library loan from a library that owns the microfilm. That way you would bypass any access problems. If you go to mapquest and put in 648 W. Evergreen, chicago, IL it will show that it is North of Division Street and East of Halstead in Chicago. It will show a red star. It seems that Evergreen was farther East and then stop for a few blocks before starting up again. Paula Graves at pgraves235@gmail.com is looking for information (presumably a photo) of 638 West Evergreen Avenue in Chicago and cannot find anything on the Cook County Assessor's website. Paula, The Cook County Assessor's website indicates that the last address in the 600 block of West Evergreen Avenue is 636 West Evergreen Avenue so there is no photo of the 638 West Evergreen Avenue location. If you look at the photo of the 636 West Evergreen property it appears that there is an empty lot to the west of 636. Take a look at this website link for 648 West Evergreen Avenue from Google Maps: www.google.com/maps This weblink will take you to the home page for Google Maps. You will have to enter the address: 648 West Evergreen Avenue, Chicago, Illinois in the search box and click GO. Once you have the map of the area be sure that you click the Hybrid box. The Hybrid box will give you a combination satellite map with street names shown on the satellite map. Keep zooming in on the address to get a closer view of the area. The Google Map shows that there is a building at what would be 648 West Evergreen Avenue. However, the address of the building is probably not an Evergreen Avenue address but an address for the street to the north of the building. My Delorme Street Atlas USA 2006 does not show a street to the north of Evergreen Avenue so I have no idea what the name of that street might be. I don't know whether my first email went through so here it is again. You can check for Illinois Deaths before 1915 at: http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/GenealogyMWeb/deathsrch.html 1916-1950 at: http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/GenealogyMWeb/idphdeathsrch.html Death certificates can be ordered at chicagogenealogy.com or mollx.com without leaving home. Mary

Hi, I believe there is a possibility my wife's great-grandmother might have died in DuPage County. I know this is the Cook County list, but wonder if any of you might know if DuPage County has an index to the death records for about 1905 to 1910. I'm not very thrilled with the idea of driving a couple of hundred miles just to discover there is nothing at the courthouse. Thank you for any help, Don Feldbruegge
Definitely look under other (but hopefully similar) names in the death records. If a family member did not provide the information at this death, he could end up with a different first name. My husband's great grandfather had no family ties at his death and was listed in the death index as Walter instead of William.
Make Note: Said famiily of Bernard HAASE were all born in Cook Co., IL. Gwen
HI, I am seeking information on my HAASE family line born between 1877-1879 to Bernard HAASE born in Mecklenburg, Germany and Hansine Elizabeth GREGERSON. Seeking information on the children of said family line and any history notes would be appreciated. Thank-you, Gwen
Would someone who has Chicago Tribune Archive access contact me off list to tell me how they got it? The "tinyurl" works on occasion, but usually asks for a password. I tried contacting Newsbank to see what it would cost to have access, but they haven't responded to me (yet). Thought I'd check with this mailing list before I call Newsbank..... Thank you in advance for your help, Dawn
My book is from 1871, and belonged to my g-grandfather. It has a brown leather cover, tooled in gold trim, with his name in the center of the book in gold. The pages are all in great condition, but the cover has rotted and fallen off and is in three pieces (front, back and center binding) Bonnie -- Jo Daviess Co, IL RAOGK Volunteer www.raogk.org Find A Grave County Keeper www.findagrave.com Visit my Genealogy Homepage: http://tinyurl.com/4zq7z
Hi again Bonnie, Hope you do not mind me asking. Is your book one of the 1871-1872 printings or one of the reprints? The reason I ask is that I searched and found many of the 1871 books for sale. The price range was $20 to abt $200 with an average of $40 for some in good to VG condition. Others interested in this book might look into this. I will order one of the first editions. One interesting book priced at $975 has what is thought to be a forged signature of S.L Clemens (Mark Twain) by forger Henry Dayton Sickles. They say Sickles worked in Chicago! My grandfather, Francis "Frank" W. Adams disappeared in Chicago shortly after my grandmother died at Cook County Hospital in March 1922. They were married in Detroit, and both appeared in Detroit in the 1920 U.S. Census. Frank W. Adams was a machinist. In Chicago in 1922 they lived at 3030 W. Madison. I have not been able to locate any records for my grandfather in Chicago. But I have found these POSSIBLE references. 1923 Chicago City Directory Adams, Frank machinist h 2231 N Robey Adams, Frank assembler h 5350 Madison 1928 Chicago City Directory Adams, Frank mach opr r 5032 W Madison Adams, Frank M chauf h 5104 W Madison Adams, Frank W traffic mgr r 3016 George 1931 Chicago Telephone Directory Adams, Frank r 4329 W Madison 1932 Chicago Telephone Directory Adams, Frank r 4329 W Madison Adams, Frank W. cfr 4171 Irving Park I do not find my Frank Adams in the 1930 U.S. Census in Chicago, although it appears he might be one of these men. I have checked all the Chicago death records from the Illinois Death Records database for Frank Adams with no success. Would anyone have any suggestions for other possible resources I could check for more information on these men? I would be grateful for any ideas. Thank you. Joseph Martin Romeoville, IL
